This whole Dmitri Payet saga feels like it has been going on forever – but this afternoon it has emerged a deal has pretty much been completed.
There’s still the small matter of a medical and another club, even Marseille themselves, coming in at the last minute and snatching him from us, but reliable sources on Twitter claim that he’s almost a West Ham player.
Some sources claim he’s ready to fly in to London to have his medical ahead of officially being unveiled tomorrow, which is a huge relief after weeks of speculation surrounding the deal.
It’s being reported that the deal took some time because of Payet himself, who was obviously trying to get the right deal for him while also leaving a club he’d quite happily stay with.
But Marseille can’t/won’t offer him a similar deal to what we’re putting on the table and, even more importantly, they need to raise €30million before the end of the moth to satisfy Financial Fair Play regulations.
So, as long as Payet doesn’t get lost on his way to east London and doesn’t need to stop off on the way to pick up a biro, he should be our player imminently.
Here’s some reactionary tweets to the latest news on the deal…
65 – Dimitri Payet has made 65 assists in Ligue 1 since 2006/07, more than any other player. Bye. pic.twitter.com/O6R5avkyFQ

As I have been saying for weeks with Payet, the deal has always been on. It's edged a lot closer today! Club expect to finalise this week

The fact that they have ACCEPTED our offer means they obviously have no intention of keeping him/tying him down to a new contract….

Payet to West Ham is an unbelievable signing. They're going to be above Spurs in the future

Transfer fee is £10.6m. Payet still had two years left on his contract at Marseille.

On paper, Payet is a tremendous signing. My question is, this deal has taken so long, why are no other club interested? #whufc #coyi
