West Ham have made an ambitious enquiry for Manchester United playmaker Juan Mata, according to El Confidencial.
The arrival of Jose Mourinho as Man United boss last week has led to question marks over Mata’s Old Trafford future, after the Spain international was surprisingly axed by the Portuguese at Chelsea two years ago.
It is believed Mourinho does not see Mata in his immediate plans at United and Mata has subsequently been linked with a transfer away this summer, with a return to old club Valencia being reported.
However, it appears West Ham’s search for a marquee signing to kick-start their new era in the Olympic Stadium has led to them enquiring about Mata’s availability.
The 28-year-old signed for United in a £33.5m deal back in January 2014 but has rarely been utilised in his preferred and most effective No.10 role.
And despite West Ham already boasting the likes of Manuel Lanzini and Dimitri Payet, both of which starred in that role last season, the Hammers clearly believe Mata could add experience and quality to what is already an impressive attacking set-up.
Mata contributed 10 goals and five assists in all competitions last term, and is valued at £25.5m by Transfermarkt.com.
