According to The Daily Star, West Ham United have emerged as front runners in the race to sign Chris Smalling.

Manchester United are willing to sell Chris Smalling this summer and the Hammers are now in pole position to snap him up.

Chris Smalling has been pushed to the periphery of the Manchester United squad over the past season.

The arrival of Victor Lindelof has further cast doubts over the future of the former Maidstone United and Fulham man.

The Red Devils also have Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Eric Bailly able to play at centre half so Smalling will be let go this summer.

According to this report, West Ham have made contact with Manchester United over the England international ahead of an opening bid of £10m.

It is believed that Manchester United will probably hold out for £15m, though.

The 6’4” centre half has played just shy of 250 games in all competitions for Manchester United but injuries halted his progress and cost him his place in the side last season.

The 27-year-old is clearly out of favour under Jose Mourinho and is likely to move this summer to reignite his stalling career.

West Ham remain favourites for his signature.
