Danny Potts intends to use the competition he has with new signing Razvan Rat as a priceless learning experience.

Rat arrived on a free transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk last month and brings with him a wealth of Champions League and International experience.

And Potts, who is hoping to add to the 10 first-team appearances he has earned so far, admits competing with the Romanian for a starting place at left-back is something he can benefit from.

He told whufc.com: “He’s a very professional, very experienced player and someone I’d definitely look up to, with all his Champions League experience.

“Being the captain of his national team as well, he’s definitely a good role model. He’s settled in very well and has fitted straight in to the team.”

And the 19-year-old wants to continue to impress manager Sam Allardyce when the Hammers travel to Colchester United for their fourth pre-season friendly tonight.

“It’s in these games where the onus is on the physical side of things, that you can try things, different set plays and experiment with things in your game, especially as a young player,” he added.

“It’s about going out there, expressing yourself and showing what you can do.

“Of course it’s a matter of getting through the games, but at the same time you want to get back in to what you know best, what you do and getting that consistent level of performance.”
