West Ham are close to signing free-agent and former Fulham striker Mladen Petric, according to several reports this morning.

The 32-year-old Croatian midfielder revealed on Facebook last night that he had passed a medical days after posting a picture of his flight to London and confirming he had reached an agreement with an unknown club.

And, despite Reading also heavily interested in the experienced Croat, it is believed the Hammers are favourites for his signature and will announce his signing later today.

The move comes immediately after the club announced club-record signing Andy Carroll had suffered a fresh injury to his foot and, according to reports in the media this morning, it could see the former Liverpool striker sidelined for a further 4 months, leaving Sam Allardyce with no option but to move quickly for a replacement.

The Hammers only registered 23 players in their 25-man Premier League squad last week, meaning they are still able to sign free-agents.

Petric was released by Fulham at the end of last season after scoring five goals in 23 top-flight appearances.
