Club-record signing Andy Carroll has suffered a new foot injury just days before his expected return from a long-term heel problem, the club have confirmed.

The former Liverpool striker was expected to feature in Sunday’s Premier League trip to Southampton after recovering from the heel injury he picked up on the final day of last season.

But the club confirmed yesterday that the 24-year-old striker picked up a fresh foot injury in training and will have scans today to assess the extent of the damage.

A whufc.com statement read: “West Ham United can confirm that Andy Carroll suffered an injury to his right foot during his return to full training.

“Although it is not in the same part of his foot as his previous injury, it is a new injury and therefore there will be no prognosis until he has seen a specialist.”

Reports this morning suggest Carroll’s latest setback could see him miss a further four months, leaving West Ham desperately short of strike options between now and the January transfer window.
