Winston Reid‘s ankle injury could see him sidelined for at least six weeks, according to the New Zealand National team medical director.

The centre-back has been ruled out of New Zealand’s World Cup play-off against Mexico and West Ham boss Sam Allardyce confirmed that the he would definitely be out for this Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Norwich City.

But with rumours that Reid could be out for anywhere between 2 and ten weeks with the injury, New Zealand’s medical director Mark Fulcher has explained the extent of his injury, which normally leaves athletes sidelined for six weeks.

He told New Zealand’s 3 News: “I’d speculate he was tackled from behind, fallen forward, his whole weight’s come forward and it’s sprained the ligaments between the bones.”

“West Ham have been excellent, they communicate really well with us, and they’ve also sent Winston to an independent orthopaedic surgeon that we know and they trust and had an independent assessment there.”

According to 3 News’ report. Fulcher went on to explain that the injury is more commonly known as a high ankle sprain.

Meanwhile, Reid’s New Zealand team-mates have slammed rumours that the 25-year-old is faking the injury, after after questions were asked due to the lack of information disclosed around the incident that caused the problem.

Defender Ben Sigmund said: “No one would do that at this time of the campaign, it’s too big a game.

All whites forward Jeremy Brockie said: “If you’re one of those people saying that then you don’t know much about football and you don’t know much about Winston Reid.

“He loves played for his country and we’re all disappointed if people are talking and saying those sorts of things.”
