Six quality free agents West Ham should try to sign this summer

With the season officially over, attention now turns towards how Slaven Bilic will strengthen his squad in the summer.

Next season is arguably just as important as last, with a new era beginning at the Olympic Stadium and the need to build on this year’s success and look to improve our seventh place finish.

We currently have a solid core of players who are capable of firing us in to the top six, but with a few players expected to leave Bilic wil need to identify where in the squad needs strengthening most.

We’re all aware that the club is in the market for a £20m+ striker to help out with the goals up front next term – though it’s also no secret there are a handful of bargains to be had as well.

So here’s a look at six soon-to-be free agents who Bilic should be looking to bring in on a free this summer…

Jeremy Pied – Right Back

Reports suggest we’ve already been looking at the Nice defender, who is a natural right back but can play further forward as well.

Pied would provide some much needed cover at right-back next season and would give young Sam Byram some competition for first-team action.

The 27-year-old made 33 Ligue 1 appearances this season, contributing three assists.

Andrija Zivkovic – Winger

The 19-year-old is expected to leave Partizan Belgrade on a free this summer and is a highly-rated youngster who has earned rave reviews across Europe in recent years.

Zivkovic is a winger who can play on either side, and he would strengthen our already incredible attack.

With the potential of being in the Europa League next season, having another winger on board would be vital for squad rotation without compromising quality in the starting XI.

He has been capped three times by Serbia and is certainly a player we should be looking to snap up.

Gregory van der Wiel – Right Back

If you don’t know about Gregory van der Wiel then you haven’t been paying much attention to football.

The Netherlands international has been a mainstay in PSG’s recent dominance of Ligue 1, making 89 league appearances since signing from Ajax in 2012.

The 28-year-old has been capped 46 times by Holland and would be first choice right-back for us for the next couple of years, as well as someone Sam Byram could learn a thing or two from.

Nicolas N’Koulou – Centre Back

Nicolas N’Koulou is a ball playing centre-half who has plenty of Europa League experience behind him with Marseille.

He’s a former team mate of Dimitri Payet and, at just 26-years-old, would be solid addition to our defensive quota.

With James Collins getting on a little bit, it’s only a matter of time before he ends up leaving us.

So if we’ve got someone like N’Koulou waiting in the wings to take over Ginge’s responsibilities it’ll save us time and money in the long run.

Sofiane Feghouli – Winger

The 26-year-old has been linked with Manchester United in the past after being in impressive form for Valencia.

Feghouli is a right winger who has plenty of skills and tricks up his sleeve.

The Algeria international also has bundles of experience in both the Champions League and Europa League, which is what we’re going to need over the next few years as we make the step up to the next level.

Michael Carrick – Midfield

We all know about Michael Carrick and although he’s now 34-years-old, sometimes you need an experienced head in the dressing room, particularly if we’re going to take the Europa League much more seriously this season (if we’re in it).

Obviously he wouldn’t be a regular first team player, but his experience could be vital and he’d be a player in the dressing most will look up to.

And of course, it’d be nice to bring him back and allow him to retire at the club where it all began for him.
