West Ham’s steady improvement under Nuno Espírito Santo continued on Thursday night as the Hammers earned an impressive 1–1 draw at Old Trafford.

Manchester United went ahead through Diogo Dalot, but a late equaliser from summer signing Soungoutou Magassa — who is himself attracting interest from Napoli — secured a valuable point.

Despite the progress, West Ham remain in the relegation zone and are in desperate need of January reinforcements.

A striker sits firmly at the top of Nuno’s wish-list, and now a fresh target has emerged.

According to Hammers News, West Ham are exploring the possibility of signing Jean-Philippe Mateta after talks over a new Crystal Palace contract stalled.

The Hammers are scouring the striker market ahead of January and believe the Frenchman could become a realistic option if his situation at Selhurst Park continues to deteriorate.

BBC Sport reporter Sami Mokbel revealed that Mateta’s negotiations with Palace have hit the buffers, with insiders indicating the player is now in no hurry to commit long-term.

His current deal runs until 2027, but a lack of progress in discussions has opened the door to interested clubs.

Mateta, who scored 17 goals last season and has been described as a “beast” by Troy Deeney, is understood to be open to a move if the right opportunity arises — something West Ham may look to take advantage of as they continue their hunt for a reliable No.9.

For the Hammers, this could be a case of striking at the right time. If Palace cannot tie Mateta down and Nuno remains short of firepower, a January move could suit all parties.
