West Ham’s hunt for January reinforcements is accelerating, and while much of the focus has been on signing a striker, the club’s biggest need might actually be at centre-back.

Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo have struggled to convince, and with the Hammers conceding the second-most goals in the Premier League, Nuno Espírito Santo knows that unless his defence tightens up, survival will remain a battle.

Now, it appears West Ham have made their first major move of the window.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, West Ham have submitted an official €18m (£16m) offer for Lecce defender Tiago Gabriel, but the bid has been rejected.

Lecce reportedly value the 20-year-old at around €25m, a price they consider fair for the summer — a strong indication they don’t intend to let him go mid-season.

The report adds that Premier League interest represents the “biggest threat” to Lecce’s hopes of keeping the highly rated Portuguese talent.

West Ham aren’t alone either, with TuttoSport reporting that Brentford are also tracking the centre-back, while Inter Milan are keeping tabs.

Juventus, meanwhile, are also said to be admirers.

Despite the initial setback, West Ham’s willingness to table a substantial bid shows how determined Nuno is to strengthen his back line — and this may not be the last attempt the club makes before January ends.
