West Ham’s summer window has been busy, with reinforcements coming thick and fast almost everywhere across the pitch.
Defensively, the arrivals of Kyle Walker-Peters and El Hadji Malick Diouf have added both Premier League know-how and youthful energy.
Between the sticks, the signing of Mads Hermansen from Leicester promises to solve long-standing goalkeeping woes. Up front, Callum Wilson brings proven Premier League firepower, despite his twilight years and injury record.
Yet one glaring problem remains: midfield. Graham Potter and the West Ham board have been quietly eyeing options, but no concrete additions have materialised—until now.
The Hammers appear ready to make a serious move for a proven Premier League talent to add both creativity and dynamism to their engine room.
Hammers Preparing Fernandes Bid

According to a fresh report from The Guardian, West Ham are preparing an opening bid for Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes.
The 21-year-old Portuguese star, who joined the Saints from Sporting Lisbon for £15 million last summer, is expected to be one of the first big departures following Southampton’s relegation.
Fernandes has quickly caught the eye, with a price tag rumoured around £30 million. But West Ham remain optimistic that a deal can be struck, having been tracking the midfielder even before his move to the south coast.
Former Southampton midfielder Jo Tessem spoke glowingly about Fernandes’s impact last season, telling BBC Radio Solent’s Southampton podcast: “Mateus Fernandes is on people’s radar because every week he plays his heart out, he is by far the best player on the football pitch from a Saints perspective.”
He added: “He is becoming an ultimate Premier League midfielder and clubs are not going to let that go. He plays like a Premier League player. He passes like a Premier League player. He is quick like a Premier League player. He conducts himself so well in midfield.”
With the new season just days away, time is running out for the Hammers to get their midfield right — and Mateus Fernandes could be the catalyst they need.
