West Ham’s defensive woes continue to mount, with 36 goals conceded in 19 Premier League games leaving Nuno Espírito Santo’s side dangerously close to the relegation zone.
In their hunt for reinforcements this January, the Hammers were reportedly interested in adding a proven centre-back to stem the rot.
West Ham Setback in Nathan Ake Pursuit

West Ham had been linked with Manchester City defender Nathan Ake, the “incredible” Dutch international who has won four Premier League titles and a Champions League since joining the Etihad from Bournemouth in 2020.
Despite his decorated career, Ake has struggled with injuries and has managed just nine Premier League starts since last season, leading to speculation that he could be available for a move.
Caught Offside reported that City would entertain offers of £26 million for the 30-year-old, with Barcelona also showing interest in a loan deal. West Ham were reportedly keen to swoop in, seeing him as a potential solution to their leaky defence.
However, the player himself has no intention of moving to east London.
Jacob Steinberg confirmed on X: “In an unsurprising development, Nathan Ake doesn’t want to join West Ham on loan.”
The reasoning is obvious: Manchester City remain title contenders, while West Ham are embroiled in a relegation battle. A player of Ake’s quality is unlikely to risk joining a side in freefall — and the Dutchman has clearly made his decision.
