Due to the exceptional longevity of the club’s first managerial appointments, by the time the club had turned 100 years old, it had only had seven permanent managers on record.
West Ham’s first non-English manager was Lou Macari, who is Scottish. Italian Gianfranco Zola became West Ham’s first non-UK manager when he was appointed in September, 2008. The Hammers’ first non-European manager was Chilean Manuel Pellegrini, who managed the club between 2018 and 2019.
The club’s most successful manager in terms of win percentage is currently David Moyes with 45.45%, who, in his second spell, turned a struggling West Ham team into regular top-six contenders in the Premier League and guided them to a club-record three consecutive seasons in Europe. Moyes remains the only manager to have managed the club permanently in two different spells.

Club legend Trevor Brooking took charge of the first team for six months following the departure of Glenn Roeder in 2003. Despite failing to keep West Ham in the Premier League, Brooking oversaw an impressive upturn in performances and guided the Hammers in its first few months of the Championship before Alan Pardew was appointed in October, 2003.
Brooking lost just two of the 20 games he took charge of, securing a win percentage of 65%.
David Moyes’ Combined Record at West Ham

| Manager | From | To | Games | W | D | L | GF | GA | +/- | Win % |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| David Moyes | 07/11/2017 | 20/05/2024 | 262 | 114 | 53 | 95 | 388 | 354 | +34 | 43.51% |
David Moyes is the only manager to have had two different permanent spells as West Ham boss.
The Scot’s first spell came following the departure of Slaven Bilic in November, 2017.
Joining on a short-term deal until the end of the season, Moyes won nine of his 31 games in charge to steer the club away from relegation trouble and to a 13th-placed Premier League finish. The club decided against extending his deal at the end of the 2017/2018 season, opting to appoint for Manchester City manager and Premier League title winner, Manuel Pellegrini.
Pellegrini last just 18 months in the job before being sacked, and West Ham decided to bring Moyes back on an 18-month deal.
Moyes’ return ended up becoming something of a masterstroke by the club. Moyes steered West Ham away from trouble again in the 2019/2020 season, with the Hammers finishing 16th.
The following period turned out to be the most successful period in West Ham’s modern history. Moyes guided West Ham to 6th in the Premier League in his first full-season, securing Europa League group stage qualification for the first time in the club’s history.
The following season, West Ham reached the Europa League semi-finals and finished 7th in the top-flight, qualifying for the Europa Conference League.
The 2022/2023 season saw a drop off in league form, with West Ham finishing 14th in the Premier League, but Moyes guided them to Conference League victory, winning the trophy unbeaten and ending the club’s 43-year trophy drought. With that came qualification for next season’s Europa League.
In 2023/2024, Moyes oversaw the club’s best ever start to a Premier league season but form dropped off after Christmas and, despite West Ham reaching the Europa League quarter-finals, West Ham had to settle for a 9th-placed finish after looking dead-certs for another top-six finish earlier in the season.
After calls from the fans for a better style of football, Moyes and the club decided to mutually depart at the end of the season, bringing an end to a hugely successful four-year spell in charge of the Hammers.
Moyes achieved a 45.45% win percentage in his second permanent spell as manager, which remains the best in the club’s entire history.

John Lyall won two FA Cups in 1975 and 1980.
David Moyes ended West Ham’s 43-year wait for silverware by lifting the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2023.
