West Ham United’s miserable start to the season has made one thing clear — big changes are needed in January.

The Hammers have struggled badly under both Graham Potter and now Nuno Espirito Santo, failing to score regularly, leaking goals at the other end, and showing little control in midfield.

Nuno is expected to overhaul his squad next month, with both incomings and outgoings planned.

However, one potential departure looks to be a major headache.

According to Claret & Hugh, West Ham will look to move on midfielder James Ward-Prowse in the January window — but it won’t be easy.

The 30-year-old has been frozen out under Nuno, failing to make either of the Portuguese coach’s first two matchday squads. His departure seems inevitable, but sources suggest there may be little to no interest in the £115,000-per-week midfielder.

A senior transfer source told the site that the Hammers tried to find buyers during the summer without success.

“Moyes was offered him [Ward-Prowse] in the summer for £15 million but said no,” the source revealed. “Not one single club went in for him in the summer. West Ham would have sold him, but nobody bid.”

When asked whether a loan move could be possible, the source admitted the options were slim: “To who? Southampton might take him, but West Ham would have to cover most of his wages.”

It’s a worrying situation for Nuno, who is eager to reshape his squad but may find himself stuck with one of the club’s highest earners.

Unless interest emerges late in the window, Ward-Prowse could be set to remain at the London Stadium beyond January — despite clearly being out of the new manager’s plans.
