West Ham United’s situation is becoming increasingly perilous.

Nuno Espírito Santo’s side remain stuck in 18th place and are edging dangerously close to the drop zone as the season reaches a crucial point.

The numbers paint a bleak picture.

The Hammers have conceded 32 goals in 16 league games, the third-worst defensive record in the division, while their attacking output has been almost as alarming, with just 19 goals scored, placing them among the lowest scorers in the Premier League.

With January fast approaching, attention is turning to how — and where — West Ham can arrest the slide.

Now, it appears work is already underway to address one of those glaring problem areas.

West Ham have begun “initial talks” over a potential January move for Norwich City striker Josh Sargent, as Nuno looks to add firepower in a desperate bid to avoid relegation.

Sources have told TEAMtalk that the United States international continues to be discussed internally at the London Stadium as a leading striker option, with early conversations now taking place over the framework of a deal.

Nuno is understood to be playing an active role in recruitment planning and has put forward his own ideas on how best to turn the season around, with the addition of a new No.9 viewed as a priority.

Sargent, who has been described as “ruthless” by Norwich teammate Ben Chrisene, would not come without risk. His Premier League record stands at just two goals from 26 appearances, and he has scored six times in 16 Championship outings so far this season.

That said, West Ham believe his physical profile, work rate and pressing ability suit the direction Nuno wants the team to move in, which has prompted contact to be made over the potential terms of a January transfer.

Norwich, however, are expected to drive a hard bargain. With talks now open and interest becoming clearer, sources indicate the Canaries could push the asking price beyond £20 million, fully aware of West Ham’s urgent need for attacking reinforcements and limited number of viable alternatives.

Sargent may not be a guaranteed solution, but with time running out and options thin on the ground, West Ham appear ready to take calculated risks.

Whether they can strike a deal on favourable terms may go a long way toward deciding their Premier League fate.
