West Ham’s summer rebuild has been quietly effective so far, with Graham Potter targeting proven Premier League experience and youthful potential in equal measure.
At the back, the additions of Kyle Walker-Peters and El Hadji Malick Diouf have added a blend of reliability and promise.
Up front, Callum Wilson—despite being in the twilight of his career—brings 88 top-flight goals with him, including more than a few past the Hammers. He knows the division, he scores goals, and now he wears claret and blue.
Meanwhile, a new goalkeeper is close to arriving, with John Victor expected to join from Botafogo in a deal worth around £8.7 million. All of that leaves just one obvious hole left to fill: midfield.
And Potter appears to have identified his ideal candidate: Jacob Ramsey of Aston Villa. But the saga, promising just days ago, has now hit a significant downturn.
West Ham Hit Ramsey Roadblock

West Ham’s interest in Jacob Ramsey has been long-standing, with reports emerging last month that the club had opened talks with Aston Villa for the £30 million-rated Englishman.
Despite no official bid being submitted, sources claimed confidence was growing behind the scenes that a deal could be struck before the window closes.
Ramsey is highly rated by Villa boss Unai Emery, but his status as a homegrown player means that any transfer fee would count as pure profit under Premier League financial rules—an important factor in today’s regulatory climate.
The Hammers had hoped that would open the door for a deal, with optimism building that the 24-year-old could be tempted to make the move from Villa Park to East London.
However, according to MailOnline, West Ham’s pursuit has now hit a snag. Ramsey, along with fellow suitors Nottingham Forest, is reportedly unconvinced by the move and is yet to be swayed by either club’s pitch.
The situation is now thought to hinge on how much game time Ramsey receives in the early weeks of the season. If he starts regularly, he could very well sign a contract extension—his current deal expires in 2027. But if he’s sidelined, the England U21 international may feel the time has come to cut ties with his boyhood club and seek a fresh challenge elsewhere.
As it stands, West Ham still want Ramsey. But right now, it seems Jacob Ramsey doesn’t yet want West Ham.
