Alphonse Areola has been made to wait potentially for a proper chance to showcase his abilities since his arrival from PSG on loan.

Lukasz Fabianski remains David Moyes’ prepared choice for Premier League games but Areola has been the first choice for cup games, although he did miss out in the Hammers’ first Europa League match against Dinamo Zagreb in September.

So far he’s featured twice, against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup and Rapid Wien in Europe, keeping two clean sheets in the process.

It had been assumed by large sections of the fanbase that the Frenchman would be preferred to Fabianski in the Premier League rather than the cup competitions and would eventually cement himself as the club’s new No.1 shot-stopper, but instead, it has been the opposite.

But a tweet by the club on Wednesday afternoon perhaps hinted that we should expect to see Areola in goal when the Hammers host Genk in the Europa League on Thursday night.

They tweeted a photo of the goalkeeper smiling in training and, while that might seem extremely speculative, it’s not often they tweet photos of the ex-Fulham star, so it’s fair to assume he’ll be chosen instead of Fabianski on Thursday…
