Axel Disasi has been something of a revelation since arriving at West Ham United on loan from Chelsea in January.
The French defender slotted straight into the heart of Nuno Espírito Santo’s defence and has quickly become one of the most influential players in the squad. Since making his debut in February, the Hammers have kept four clean sheets in eight matches, winning four and losing just once during that run.
His impact has played a major role in West Ham’s improved form, and it is no surprise the club would like to turn his temporary move into a permanent one this summer.
However, with finances tight at the London Stadium, completing such a deal may not be straightforward. Interestingly, one of West Ham’s brightest young stars could end up playing a key role in whether that move becomes possible.
Diouf Key to Disasi Deal

West Ham do not currently hold an option to buy Axel Disasi following his short-term loan spell, meaning any permanent transfer would require fresh negotiations with Chelsea.
The Blues are not expected to keep the defender long term, but they will still look to recover a sizeable fee for a player they previously invested heavily in. That could prove problematic for West Ham, particularly given the club’s well-documented financial challenges and the likelihood they may need to sell players this summer.
At the same time, another storyline has begun to gather momentum — Chelsea’s growing interest in West Ham’s attacking left-back El Hadji Malick Diouf.
The 21-year-old has enjoyed a superb debut campaign in east London and has already made a strong impression. As several reports noted recently: “At just 21 years old, he has already featured in 23 league matches and provided five assists, showcasing his attacking prowess from the left-back position. His performances have particularly caught the eye of Chelsea, who are looking to bolster this area of their squad in the upcoming transfer window.”
That interest could open the door to a potential negotiation between the two clubs.
Could a Diouf–Disasi Swap Be Possible?
Diouf’s rapid rise has not gone unnoticed across Europe. Data analysts at Analytics United have even described the Senegalese defender as “one of the most exciting young full-backs in world football,” highlighting just how quickly his reputation is growing.
There is no doubt Diouf has been a huge success for West Ham since arriving, offering pace, attacking quality and creativity from the left flank. Yet Disasi’s influence has arguably been just as significant, particularly in stabilising a defence that had struggled earlier in the season.
If West Ham do remain in the Premier League, the club may face a difficult decision. Keeping both players could prove financially unrealistic, especially if major offers arrive for Diouf and Chelsea demand a substantial fee for Disasi.
A scenario in which Chelsea pursue Diouf while West Ham attempt to secure Disasi could therefore create an intriguing transfer discussion between the two clubs. Either way, the Hammers may soon find themselves weighing up which player they would rather build their future around.
