West Ham’s nightmare start to the season has left them in deep trouble — and January is already shaping up to be a defining month for new manager Nuno Espírito Santo.
The Hammers have picked up just one win from their opening eight Premier League matches, scoring far too few goals and conceding far too many.
Despite increasingly diminishing glimpses of promise under Nuno, West Ham sit 19th in the table, with the new boss desperate to bring in reinforcements that can turn their season around.
After a summer of mixed recruitment and the departure of key players like Michail Antonio and Nayef Aguerd, Nuno knows he’ll need fresh faces up front if West Ham are to have any chance of avoiding a relegation battle.
Ornstein Gives Update on West Ham’s Transfer Plans

Speaking on The Back Pages podcast, respected journalist David Ornstein provided insight into West Ham’s current situation and their plans heading into the January window.
The reporter suggested that the Hammers are already looking to bolster their attack, noting that several of the club’s key attacking players have underperformed this term.
“[Crysensio] Summerville is now back from injury, but struggling to find much of an impact, and no recognised striker in the absence of [Niclas] Fullkrug. And we know the quality that Jarrod Bowen possesses, but it’s not easy on his own, pretty much,” Ornstein said.
He added: “[Lucas] Paqueta is not making the sort of contribution that we’ve come to know him for. So maybe they’ll be trying to get through to January and give Nuno some recruitment to try and boost this season.”
With Ivan Toney and Joshua Zirkzee among those already linked to East London, it’s clear that January will be a crunch point for the Hammers’ hopes of survival — and for Nuno’s ambitions to make his mark at the London Stadium.
