West Ham United could make a surprising swoop for Manchester City defender Eliaquim Mangala, according to ESPN.

West Ham are considering strengthening their options at the back before the end of the transfer window.

Eliaquim Mangala has been made available for transfer and this move would have to be a permanent one as Joe Hart is already on loan from Manchester City.

The 8-cap France international has dropped down the pecking order at Man City and spent last season on loan at Valencia.

With 64 Manchester City appearances to his name, the 26-year-old has experience of Premier League football and he has also played top tier football in Belgium (Standard Liege), Portugal (Porto) and Spain (Valencia).

West Ham could now make a move for the out-of-favour defender after bringing in Joe Hart and Pablo Zabaleta from Manchester City earlier in this transfer window.

This summer, the Hammers have addressed a number of problem positions: right back, striker, winger, etc.

However, perhaps we declined to address that centre half was also an issue.

Following a 4-0 thrashing at Old Trafford, perhaps it is indeed time to add to the defensive options.

West Ham’s current centre backs include Winston Reid, Angelo Ogbonna, Jose Fonte, James Collins and Declan Rice.
