West Ham’s problems this season have been painfully obvious at both ends of the pitch.

Defensively, they have been far too easy to cut open, conceding 32 goals in just 16 Premier League games.

At the other end, the lack of threat has been just as damaging, with only 19 goals scored over the same period.

That blunt combination has left the Hammers hovering in 18th place and firmly in relegation trouble.

With January fast approaching, recruitment is no longer optional but essential.

And now, West Ham are looking at a player who could, remarkably, help address issues at both ends of the pitch.

West Ham are among a group of clubs showing serious interest in FC Utrecht left-back Souffian El Karouani ahead of the January transfer window.

The 25-year-old Morocco international has been a standout performer in the Eredivisie since joining Utrecht on a free transfer in 2023.

Despite operating primarily as a left-back, El Karouani has delivered exceptional attacking output, registering five goals and 27 assists across 97 appearances.

This season alone, he has already contributed three goals and an eye-catching 15 assists — extraordinary numbers for a defender.

His form has not gone unnoticed. De Telegraaf claim West Ham are competing with Eintracht Frankfurt, Bologna, Porto and Benfica, all of whom are keen to add El Karouani to their squads in January.

A key factor is his contract situation. El Karouani has just over six months remaining on his deal, meaning the upcoming window represents Utrecht’s final opportunity to secure a transfer fee.

Their current record sale stands at €12m, but with the defender nearing the end of his contract, West Ham could land him for significantly less.

For a side struggling defensively while also lacking creativity from wide areas, El Karouani’s blend of solidity and attacking production makes him an intriguing option — and potentially a rare January signing capable of improving both boxes.
