If reports this morning are true then we might just be on the verge of signing FC Basel defender Fabian Schar.

The defender has been tracked by the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham in recent years and he was a stand-out star in Switzerland’s World Cup campaign last summer.

Reports from London 24 this morning suggest we’ve already agreed a £5million fee for the 23-year-old and that contract negotiations with the player are well under way…

If this is the case, we’ll have pulled off one hell of a coup for a player who is highly-rated across Europe. We’ve been crying out for another centre-half for a few transfer window now, so Schar’s potential arrival means we can no longer worry about a defensive injury crisis, like the one we’re currently experiencing.

You’d expect Schar would be brought in to partner Winston Reid, with James Tomkins preferred as a stand in with James Collins.

This is more proof that the club is planning with one eye on our future in the Olympic Stadium. Schar has Champions League and Europa League experience and could well be the first of many ‘big’ or ‘highly-rated’ names to arrive at the club before we make the move in August 2016.

Never seen him play? Here’s a highlights reel of him…

And, as expected, West Ham fans are pretty excited about the prospect of Schar signing, especially for just £5million…
