West Ham’s summer transfer window was nothing short of chaos.

Graham Potter oversaw a major squad shake-up with plenty of ins and outs, while deadline day brought its fair share of late drama.

The Irons waved goodbye to a mix of long-and-short-serving names like Nayef Aguerd, Maxwel Cornet, Michail Antonio, Aaron Cresswell and Vladimir Coufal, while star man Mohammed Kudus made the shock switch to Spurs.

On the other side of the ledger, Callum Wilson and Kyle Walker-Peters added Premier League know-how, though it hasn’t quite clicked yet. There was also the arrival of exciting youngsters Soungoutou Magassa and Mateus Fernandes, while Igor Julio joined on loan from Brighton at the eleventh hour.

But despite all of that activity, it looks like the Hammers might not be finished just yet.

Could West Ham Dip Into the Free Agent Market?

Even though the window is officially closed, West Ham are not ruling out moving for out-of-contract players.

An intriguing list of names remains available, including former Barcelona and Dortmund striker Paco Alcácer, ex-Chelsea star Hakim Ziyech, former Arsenal and Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen.

Elsewhere, there are defensive options such as former Gunner Takehiro Tomiyasu — once strongly linked with the Irons — as well as experienced goalkeepers Fraser Forster and Rui Patrício.

Hammers News put the question directly to a top club spokesperson: could Graham Potter look to bolster his squad with a free agent? The answer was deliberately coy.

“I doubt we will sign any free agents,” the spokesman admitted. “But who knows what will happen?”

With West Ham’s shaky start to the campaign — three defeats and just one, albeit impressive, win — the temptation to add reinforcements could yet prove too strong to resist. The door isn’t fully closed, and fans may want to keep one eye on that free agent list just in case.
