West Ham United want to sign at least one striker this summer and have been consistently linked with a move for Jermain Defoe.

Sunderland have been relegated despite Defoe’s haul of 15 league goals this season and a clause in his contract would allow him to leave the Stadium of Light for free rather than stay in the Championship.

The England international has plenty of offers on the table but a football pundit believes that Defoe wants to return to West Ham.

Sky Sports pundit Tony Cottee thinks that Jermain Defoe would prefer a move to West Ham United over other options this summer.

The veteran striker started his illustrious career at West Ham and could return to finish it there.

The 34-year-old has been tipped to return to East London by former West Ham striker Tony Cottee, depending on the ambition of the owners.

West Ham are hunting for a new striker due to injury concerns over Diafra Sakho and Andy Carroll and the failure of loan duo Simone Zaza (0 goals) and Jonathan Calleri (1 goal).

Defoe on a free transfer is thought to be high on the Hammers’ priority list as they seek a better 2017/18 campaign.
