Three in, three out at West Ham this January

David Sullivan, David Gold, Slaven Bilic and young Jack Sullivan have all confirmed that transfer business is unlikely this window.

Due to the wage restrictions imposed by Financial Fair Play rules, we have reached our cap and must sell if we are to buy.

January is therefore expected to be a quiet month for the Hammers but we could potentially push one deal through if we are able to get rid of some our fringe players and free up allotted wage space.

This article looks at three players that might be heading for the exit door and three players that we should consider if we have the funds to do so…

OUT – Joey O’Brien

Joey O’Brien is the first name on this list and expected to leave West Ham in the January window.

The versatile Irish fullback was a regular in the side under Sam Allardyce but has failed to make a single appearance since Slaven Bilic took over.

To be completely honest, O’Brien never has been good enough to cut it at this level and now that Bilic deems him surplus to requirements it is in the best interests of both parties to offload the 29-year-old.

He would provide reasonable, experienced back-up for Premier League newcomers Bournemouth or Norwich or alternatively could drop down to the Championship for more frequent game time.

OUT – Nikica Jelavic

Jelavic re-joined fellow Croat and former manager Slaven Bilic on deadline day to cover for our injury-plagued strikers.

With a fully fit squad, the former Everton and Hull frontman is fifth choice striker and he has failed to find the net so far in his 9 appearances for the Hammers.

Selling the 30-year-old would free up some wages and raise some spending money too in a search for a better alternative.

OUT – Elliot Lee

Perhaps it is finally time to end Elliot Lee’s long-term spell at West Ham. Sentimental value aside, Lee is now 21-years-old and has failed to break into the Hammers’ first team despite us often being short on attacking options.

Although he scores goals at under 21 level, he has never really replicated that goalscoring form in his loan spells to lower league clubs so will he ever make the cut?

An underwhelming permanent move to a League One or League Two side might well be on the cards for Elliot.

IN – Sam Byram

If any positions are to be prioritised this window then right back should top the list. Byram is a sensible choice.

At only 22 years of age he has amassed over 125 league appearances for Championship side Leeds and attracted plenty of admirers along the way. West Ham have been strongly linked with him as it is not secret that we are after a long-term solution to our right back problem.

Byram was born in Thurrock, Essex and is apparently a West Ham fan which may tempt him to join the Hammers.

If we can raise enough money from sales then the versatile youngster must surely be the obvious choice.

IN – Gokhan Tore

This is a very optimistic addition to the article. Tore is rated at about £12m and has tickled our interest having previously worked with Bilic at Besiktas.

Tore is an exciting young winger who has pace, skill and strength – all the assets helpful for life in the Premier League. The 23-year-old is supposedly keen on a move to link up with his former boss but this deal might have to wait for the summer as I predict that he’ll be too expensive.

In order to secure Tore in January, we would probably have to sell one of our star strikers in Mauro Zarate, Andy Carroll or Enner Valencia. Bilic keeps mentioning that no business will be done unless an “exceptional deal” comes up. Could this be it?

IN – Tendayi Darikwa

A relative unknown until recently, Tendayi Darikwa has taken the Championship by storm this season.

Since his summer arrival from Chesterfield, he has kept experienced alternative right back Matthew Lowton out of the Burnley side.

The 24-year-old previously turned down the chance to join Manchester United in favour of developing his game in the lower leagues and this move looks to be paying off as his sparkling performances have gained him attention from us as well as Leicester and West Brom.

Darikwa can also play in midfield and would probably be slightly cheaper than Sam Byram.
