It was a record transfer window for the Premier League in the summer, with almost £900m spent by clubs.

We all know the biggest, headline grabbing signings – Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne to Man City, Christian Benteke to Liverpool, Petr Cech to Arsenal, Anthony Martial to Man United, etc.

But one that seemingly slipped under the radar for most of the summer and has only just grabbed the attention of everyone in the Premier League is our capture of Marseille’s Dimitri Payet.

The French midfielder immediately appeared to be a bargain buy for £10.7m when you consider only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi created more goals than him across Europe’s top five leagues last season. But the fact he’d signed for West Ham meant no one really showed much interest. Until now.

Payet has scored three and assisted one in his first five Premier League appearances for the club, and his brace against Newcastle on Monday suddenly had everyone wondering why he hadn’t ended up at a ‘bigger’ club in the summer.

But while everyone still talks about Sterling, De Bruyne, Benteke, Cech and Martial, Payet’s contribution during the early stages of the campaign have ensured he is statistically the Premier League’s fifth best performing player to far this term – according to the Premier League’s EA Sports Player Performance Index.

But, what is perhaps most surprising, is the fact he is the BEST performing summer signing in the Premier League so far…

PPI Week 5 - Dimitri Payet

So while the so-called ‘big clubs’ in the Premier League continue to splash the cash in order to get the ‘best’ players in the world, ‘little old West Ham’ have bagged a world class player like Payet for a fraction of the price, and with far more rewarding results.
