Today saw George Moncur complete a permanent switch to Colchester United on a permanent deal.

Son of former Hammer John Moncur, George had once been touted as one of the youngsters at the club hotly tipped to break in to the first team and stay there for many years. But after making just two first team appearances, he’s been allowed to leave the club permanently.

Some fans have expressed their sadness at seeing another one of our youngsters leave the club under Sam Allardyce, while others believe Moncur’s exit spells the official end of what was once the county’s best youth academy.

When you consider the fact that the last West Ham Academy products to become real first team regulars were Mark Noble and James Tomkins, you have to wonder whether our famous academy just isn’t what it used to be.
