Journalist Florian Plettenberg has claimed that West Ham could listen to “exceptional offers” for Edson Alvarez this summer, but would still rather keep hold of him.
The Mexican joined the Hammers from Ajax last summer, proving to be an important player in his first season at the London Stadium.
Alvarez started 28 Premier League matches in total in 2023/24, not to mention featuring seven times in the Europa League, and Anton Ferdinand heaped praise on him, saying:
“The signings that have come in have been fantastic. Alvarez looks a joke. He looks unbelievable. The way he gets around the pitch.
“The fact we got rid of Declan to Arsenal, which is a massive hole in our starting XI, to now bring him in, who gets around the park very very well, does all the dirty stuff with a smile on his face, and he can play.”
Losing Alvarez just a year after making the move to West Ham would likely be a blow for Julen Lopetegui, and now a fresh update has emerged regarding his future.
Taking to X on Thursday morning, Sky Sport journalist Plettenberg claimed that the Hammers plan to have the 26-year-old in their squad this season, but their head could potentially be turned by a huge offer from another club:
“Edson Alvarez, 100 % planned in for the season by West Ham! … as he’s considered to be a very important player. WHUFC, only willing to listen for exceptional offers. There are inquiries on the table for the 26 y/o midfielder. Contract until 2028.”
Alvarez has been such an impressive performer for West Ham since joining, so letting him leave within 12 months makes no sense at all.
The Mexico international’s versatility allows him to shine as both a central midfielder and a centre-back, and he will be a massive squad player for Lopetegui, during a campaign in which the Hammers’ depth could be the difference between them qualifying for Europe or not.
At 26, Alvarez has so much more to offer West Ham for many years, and the hope is that he spends the best period of his career at the club, continuing to shine both in midfield and defence.
