David Moyes can continue his fantastic West Ham project, despite the lack of transfer activity this summer, according to We Are West Ham Podcast‘s James Jones.

West Ham have only managed to sign goalkeeper Alphonse Areola on loan this summer, despite being in desperate need of another striker and a central midfielder to increase squad depth.

But with just a few days until the start of the new season and a couple of weeks from the summer transfer window closing, it is practically the same squad that finished 6th in 2020/2021 being tasked with delivering once again.

Back in 2015, David Gold and David Sullivan told fans West Ham can win the Premier League and Champions League within five years. Six years and a handful of relegation battles on, the Hammers finally go into a season involving European group stage football, although a Premier League and Champions League title still eludes the club.

And despite the success of a sixth-placed Premier League finish last term, Jones insists that while he has full faith in David Moyes’ ability to keep improving the team’s fortunes on the pitch, the club needs to back him in the transfer window to ensure 2020/2021 wasn’t just another one-off season.

Speaking on the latest We Are West Ham Podcast episode, Jones said: “We were promised what we’re about to experience. Actually, we were promised better.

“I’d like to think this isn’t a one-off, that’s not to say we’re going to be in it every year but I’d like to think that, over the coming seasons, this won’t be just an ‘Oh remember when we were in the Europa League group stages?’

“I do believe that under Moyes, the squad that he’s got and what he’s building, the project he’s building, I do believe he can get us there again. How he gets us there is a different matter. Maybe if he had a go at the League Cup and won that we’d get back into it, I don’t know.

“I have full faith in Moyes and his squad and if he’s backed in the transfer window, even better. It is what we promised, or partly what we were promised, and we should now be looking to the club to build on that.

“Whether that happens or not is a different matter but let’s just enjoy the season and see what happens.”
