O’Neil wants Lampard return

0
Gary O'Neil

Gary O’Neil would welcome an Upton Park return for Chelsea’s Frank Lampard.

The 34-year-old Chelsea midfielder – from Romford – is out of contract at Stamford Bridge in the summer and it’s looking more and more likely he’ll be able to walk away on a free, despite being the club’s most influential player since signing from the Hammers in 2001.

And O’Neil believes the club should try and tempt him back to where he began his career as an academy graduate.

He told the Sun on Sunday: “It’s surprising that a player of that stature and quality is being allowed to run out his contract.

“If the money was right and the deal was right, he’s a player I would love to see back at West Ham. He would be a great player ti sign if the club could get hold of him.”

The 29-year-old also revealed his disappointment in the club’s decision to hold off on offering Sam Allardyce a new deal.

“It shocks me that his job might be under threat,” he said.

“The lads all love working for him.”

Chelsea v West Ham – Hammers good value for the draw

Sam Allardyce and Rafa Benitez

West Ham travel to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon and there is good value for Sam Allardyce’s men to grab an unexpected draw.

As ever when Chelsea are at home – regardless of who it is against – the Blues are the team expected to pick up the points. Let’s face it though, they are rather unpredictable this season to say the least.

In Europa League action on Thursday night, there could be some tired legs in the Chelsea team and with a packed fixture schedule, how much thought would they have given Sunday’s game?

With an FA Cup replay against Manchester United to come and the latter stages of a Europa League campaign, this home fixture with the Hammers might be an opportunity to rest a player or two.

It also might see them switch off mentality. They had to focus massively on Thursday and could be – just a little bit – drained for the visit of West Ham.

The Hammers need to start quickly, get stuck in, not give Chelsea a second on the ball and have the home crowd rattled.

After all, with the Chelsea faithful far from convinced by the Rafa Benitez reign, it seems unlikely they would take too well to losing early on against their London rivals. The start is crucial in any game, but this one particularly.

As you might expect, Chelsea are the 2/5 favourites to grab the first goal of the game, while West Ham are available at 3/1. This is tempting though, with the home side perhaps needing a wake up call.

When it comes to the outright winner odds, Chelsea again are at 2/5, while you can get 17/2 on West Ham. Quite simply, people aren’t expecting anything other than a home win.

They weren’t expecting anything other than an away win when these two teams met in December either were they? Especially when Juan Mata opened the scoring.

West Ham battled back to win 3-1 though in probably the highlight of the season so far for the Hammers. Everyone raised their game and Chelsea had no answer.

Can Allardyce’s men repeat this type of display on Sunday? Well, Chelsea’s home performances against Fulham, QPR and Southampton suggest they could be slightly vulnerable.

It is all about West Ham’s mentality of course, but if they show no fear, they are more than capable of getting a valuable point – available at tempting odds of 4/1.

Say it quietly, but the last time these two teams met on a Sunday, it was a 1-1 draw. For this outcome, you can get 11/1.

Read into that what you will, but West Ham certainly have more chance of a positive result than people are making out.

Match odds: Chelsea – 2/5, Draw 4/1, West Ham 17/2

George McCartney has returned to training follow a three-month spell on the side lines.

The left-back, who has made 126 first team appearances over two spells at Upton Park, suffered a knee-ligament injury at the beginning of December and his return will be a welcome boost to the squad as they prepare to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

With the likes of Dan Potts and Joey O’Brien both covering in McCartney’s absence, Sam Allardyce will be relieved to know he can finally call on the reliable and consistent left-back once more as he aims to mastermind Premier League survival in the club’s first season back since promotion in May.

Joe Cole’s goal in the 3-2 loss to Tottenham won the Goal of the Month with a huge 68% of the vote, beating Andy Carroll’s towering header against Swansea.

Diame wants Chelsea double

Mo Diame scores against Chelsea

Mo Diame believes West Ham can complete an unlikely double over Chelsea on Sunday and take another step towards guaranteed Premier League safety.

The Senegalese midfielder came off the bench to influence the Hammers’ superb 3-1 victory over Rafa Benitez’s side back in December and he now believes the win away at Stoke last weekend will give the players the confidence they need to win away from home.

He told whufc.com: “It’s about confidence, it’s eleven v eleven on the pitch whether we’re at home or away.

“I don’t know why we haven’t got better results when we’ve played away this season, so the Stoke result was very important for us and now we can look forward to the Chelsea game.”

Looking back on his match winning performance in the reverse fixture, Diame admits it remains his best moment in a West Ham shirt, but has warned his team mates that Chelsea will be eager for revenge as they continue their search for a top four finish.

“Emotionally, that was the best feeling I’ve had at West Ham. The fans were very happy and pushed the team on when Coley scored the equaliser. It was a great atmosphere and it got even better when we scored the second and third to win the game,” he added.

“Now Chelsea know what we can do, so it’s not going to be easy, but we just need to give our best and we’ll see what happens.”
