Development Squad goalkeeper Jake Larkins suffered minor injuries in a car accident on Monday and is now at home recovering.

The 19-year-old was on his way to meet up with his team-mates ahead of their Barclays U21 Premier League tie at Southampton when he  was involved in a road collision on the A12.

Larkins received medical treatment at Queen’s Hospital in Romford and was released late Monday evening and is now recovering from minor head and neck injuries at home with his family.

The clash with Southampton will now be rearranged after being postponed.

Demel happy with Hammers life

Guy Demel

Guy Demel is enjoying life as a West Ham player and believes he can achieve a lot at the club.

The Ivorian defender signed a new contract in January, which will keep him at the club until at least 2015, and admits he is working hard to improve as a player and is fully focused on helping the Hammers finish in the top ten this season.

He told whufc.com: “Last season I was injured for a couple of months. Of course, this is my first complete season, thought we still have a couple of games before the end.

“I am quite happy, it is not finished, I think I still have many things to achieve with West Ham.

“First of all we are going to try and finish in a better position and I will during the holiday to be a better player next season.”

Demel also believes the side’s defensive improvement in recent games is all down to the hard work of the players and he puts a huge emphasis on team work ahead of the visit of Manchester United on Wednesday night.

“We work really hard during the week looking at the system of the other team,” he said.

“As long as we are defending as a team well, it is easier for the defence to keep tight and defend well themselves. If the offensive players are given too much space, you can be the best defender in the world, but you are going to be in trouble.

“We are in a really important phase now and we know the concentration has to be at the top. We are in a good position, but we can’t afford to lose points even against Manchester United, so we are going to try and get a good result.”

Allardyce: “Carroll is too expensive”

Andy Carroll

Sam Allardyce admits financial restrictions next season may result in West Ham not being able to afford to sign Andy Carroll on a permanent basis.

The Hammers have the option to sign the 24-year-old on loan Liverpool striker for around £17million, although reports last week suggested they were hoping to bring that down to nearer £10million.

But Allardyce has revealed that a deal will only be done if the new financial fair play rules that come in to play next season don’t have a huge impact on the club’s transfer budget.

He told Sky Sports: “The hardest thing is the overall package and making sure it’s sustainable. I point to financial restrictions being implemented next season that will blow the whole deal in one go.

“Someone will have a bigger budget than us probably but that is what is going to happen.

“In one fell swoop the financial restrictions mean we won’t be able to sign Andy Carroll from Liverpool because it is too expensive, even if we wanted him, which we do.”

It is believed Carroll would have to take a significant cut in his wages in order to make it more affordable for West Ham to secure his signature, but reports have suggested recently that Liverpool may use him in a deal to sign Newcastle’s Hatem Ben-Arfa in the summer.

Carroll open to Upton Park stay

Andy Carroll

Andy Carroll has admitted he would be happy to sign a permanent deal at West Ham but admits he has no idea what the future holds for him.

The 24-year-old England striker is enjoying the best form of his career at present, having netted five goals in his last seven games for the Hammers.

And he has revealed a permanent stay in East London would appeal to him, although his is still unsure of where he will be playing next season.

He said: “It has  been great here and every minute has been fantastic. The lads have been great, the gaffer has been great and the fans are unbelievable.

“It is obviously a great club and I do not see why not. I don’t know what is happening so we will just have to wait and see what happens at the end of the season.”

In the meantime, Carroll has set his sights on ensuring West Ham get more points on the board in order to mathematically secure Premier League safety, and wants to add to his goal tally between now and the end of the campaign.

“I’m on a nice run of goals and obviously I’m playing games and the goals are coming so I’m happy with that,” he told whufc.com.

“I’m working hard in training and running a bit in the games and the goals are coming, so I must be doing something right.

“A couple more points and we should be safe. We’ve definitely got to go for a top-half finish.”

Allardyce praises improved away form

Sam Allardyce

Sam Allardyce has praised the way his players have improved their results away from home and believes it has been vital the Hammers’ Premier League safety.

Before the 1-0 victory at Stoke last month the Hammers had lost eight consecutive games on the road and were beginning to flirt dangerously with a relegation battle.

But Allardyce’s men have since ground out two important draws at Liverpool and Southampton to add to the win at the Britannia, allowing them to look towards the top half of the table rather than looking over their shoulder.

He told whufc.com: “We went to Stoke City a few weeks ago having lost eight away games on the trot and I said to the lads if you want to make sure we are where we want to be – going towards the top half – you’re going to have to put the away results right.

“From thereon we’ve won one, drawn two and only lost one, so to put five points out of 12 on the board has made all the difference for us and kept the pressure off us from maybe sliding down towards the bottom four.

“It was another precious point on Saturday. The conditions were very difficult weather-wise, it was like the middle of winter out there, and of course Southampton were in good form at home, which we nullified.”

And Allardyce admits a slight adaptation to his tactics has been a big factor in the club’s improved away form and believes they could have taken all three points against Southampton.

“The overal tactics and the way we played  was very good,” he said.

“We got what we deserved and if anything we might have got a winner. It was about us not surrendering too easily. I felt previously that we were being opened up too many times, we were surrendering possession and the opposition were just playing through us and round us and scoring goals.

“That had to stop, we had to become more resilient defensively as a unit. We had to be more mindful of our responsibilities, with the sill in this league, teams will take advantage if you leave gaps and spaces. We’ve put that right and it’s ended up getting us a few results.”
