Proposed starting XI v. Newcastle United

0

It’s difficult to make a case for Sam Allardyce to ring the changes to today’s Premier League home meeting with Newcastle United.

The victory at Cardiff last week was the best possible way to boost confidence within the squad, as well as the return of Andy Carroll. And with the news that Ravel Morrison will be in the squad following a groin injury, there’s finally a reason believe we can begin pulling away from the drop zone.

Sam Allardyce admitted in an interview with The Sun this morning that Andy Carroll is still a few weeks from starting a game, but having him on the bench obviously the next best thing. His impact off the bench against Cardiff turned out to be match-winning, so we can expect to see him introduced some time in the second half.

James Collins returns from injury and should come in for the suspended James Tonmkins, while Razvan Rat could come in for Guy Demel, who was stretched off last weekend with severe concussion.

The only big question is whether Allardyce chooses to start Ravel Morrison or not. He needs a big performance and perhaps a must-win game could be his chance to shine again. Other than that, Carlton Cole should start instead of Modibo Maiga, and Mark Noble will keep the armband in Kevin Nolan’s absence.

Here’s how we think Allardyce may line-up at the Boleyn Ground this afternoon…

And here’s how the fans think Allardyce should approach things…

How do you think we’ll line-up against Newcastle this afternoon? Should Ravel Morrison start? Let us know in the comments section below.

Strikers in abundance. But are they all that?

Andy Carroll - West Ham

So the rumour mill rumbles on again in the January transfer “farce”.

I use the word farce, because there’s probably no truth in 98 % of it. It has become a tool of convenience for our dear players’ agents and club owners alike. If you choose to believe a small percentage of the rumours, however, it would seem conceivable that we could well end up with six (proven) strikers come February.

And that is not including Tony Carr’s up and comings, who are bursting to come through. “What?” say you, Sam? Exactly the same as the summer “farce”! But are any of the “goal scorers” actually all that, as Adrian Durham would say.

Andy Carroll: We all know what Andy Carroll brings to a Sam Allardyce system. He is crucial to the current set up, hence where we are in the table without him.

Goals per games? Not great.

Carlton Cole: In my humble opinion, we would not have been promoted in May 2012 without Carlton. What a final he had. “Always Believe”.

Goals per game? Not great.

Alberto Gilardino: Obviously knows his way around Italy. Very good stats as in, goals per game. Little bit on the short side for Allardyce, as he’s only 6 foot tall.

Goals per game? Not bad.

Lacina Traore: Tall enough for Allardyce. Who knows?

Goals per games: Quite good.

Ishak Belfodil: The same as Traore, to be honest. Hes been about , but not quite happened yet.

Goals per games: worse than me!

Last but not least, Modibo Maiga: I’ve left Modibo until last simply because I can hear you all sighing, “OH NO” HE,S SH*@E.” Yes he is a lot of the time, he looks lazy etc. But Im sure he tries his best. He was just a bad lack of judgement by both the management the scouting staff.

Goals per games: worse than my Nan!

Now, if you look at the “goals per game“ section. There is a definite pattern here.

Is there a goalscorer amongst the players we have or the players we are supposedly chasing? Because, if you total up, the six aforementioned strikers and, their goals-per-game ratios, it looks quite scary…

Total appearances by all six players: 1315

Total goals by all six players:  428

Collective games per goal: 3.072

Where does that leave us, in our quest to becoming a big club? Are we Tottenham in disguise?

My point is this; we are crying out for a fox in the box. A Tony Cottee. The one that got away, Jermain Defoe?

Or, just maybe, the one that hasn’t got away just yet. Why can we not take the gamble on Jordan Rhodes?  Two hundred and fifty senior games, 140 senior goals. That’s a ratio of a goal in every 1.78 games.

Come on Sam, I‘m just a deluded £500-a-week builder! You’re the football science and stat man.

Surely a proven goalscorer that ticks all the boxes, the one you’ve been searching for every week this season, isn’t on Match of the Day. No need for any more excuses. Just thousands of Happy Hammers.

Because we’re really not that far away from being bigger than our massive North London neighbours in the white shirts.

A view from the East.

Betting Preview: West Ham United v Newcastle United

Last week we had a 20/1 winner in Mark Noble scoring the last goal and he was also recommended at 13/2 to score anytime.

For once in a long time we can look forward to Saturday’s game versus Newcastle United with some confidence after a spirited win with 10 men against Cardiff. The stats against Newcastle don’t look too bad – with us winning six, drawing five and losing six out of the last 17 games…

Recent history v Newcastle

Correct Score

As the stats show, there is a history of goals in our recent games, and a 2-1 win for the Hammers looks a great bet at 9/, while a 2-2 draw at 11/1 is also inviting.

There are many unusual bets out there ,and West Ham can be backed at 9/2 to win to nil. Another of the unusual bets available is West Ham to score a penalty at 17/2, and we know that if one is awarded Mark Noble has a great record in converting them.

Correct score stats v. Newcastle

First & Last Goal Scorer

After seeing Mark Noble covering every blade of grass last week in a man of the match performance, and capping it off with a late goal, it doesn’t look like the bookies have taken much notice, as he can be got at 18/1 to score first or last goal.

And after having him recommended at 20/1 last week, we are not going to abandon him now. Noble can also be got at 13/2 to score anytime. The added bonus of seeing Andy Carroll return for 20 minutes means we will probably see him again at some stage in the second half. He can be got at 13/2 for last goal if anyone fancies taking a chance…

First & last goal scorer stats v Newcastle

This weeks recommended bets are one of the following…

  • Mark Noble first or last goal scorer at 18/1
  • Mark Noble anytime scorer at 13/2
  • Andy Carroll last goal scorer at 13/2

Remember, don’t let the Claret & Blue heart rule the head, it’s a long season.

Match Preview: West Ham United vs. Newcastle United

It’s funny what a win and a few returning players can do for your confidence, isn’t it?

The 2-0 victory at Cardiff City last weekend was our first in eight and one that appears to have boosted the mood of everyone associated with the club, from the players right down to the fans.

The biggest highlight, obviously, was the return of Andy Carroll. Seeing come on and set up Mark Noble for the second goal on Saturday was a relief in more ways than one. It secured victory on the day and it gave us hope that we are finally going to stick picking up the results needed to pull away from the bottom three.

There’s a long way to, of course, but with James Collins, Winston Reid and Ricardo Vaz Te also edging ever closer to their returns, we can finally see what we’re all about with a full strength side.

This weekend’s game against Newcastle United is just as big as last week’s. We haven’t won back-to-back Premier League games since we returned to the Premier League but, if we can finally get that monkey of our backs, the confidence in the side will only improve further and there’ll be less poor records hanging over our heads every week.

We’re unbeaten against Newcastle since we returned last season and have kept three straight clean sheets, which is unusual stat for us to be associated with these days.

And it’s perhaps the best time to play the Magpies at the moment, with them losing their last four games in all competitions. As we’re beginning to regain some confidence and have a number of key players returning from injury, there’s no reason why we can’t secure another crucial victory at the Boleyn Ground.

After weeks of anger, confusion and hurt, we suddenly feel like we’re in a better place. The faith is slowly returning and, if we can stay relatively injury free for the remainder of the season, as well as bringing in few reinforcements as promised, all those fears of relegation might be described as ‘just a blip’ come the end of the season. Let’s hope so, anyway.

Verdict: Back-to-back Premier League victories? Yes please!

Team News:

West Ham United (17th, 18 points)

James Tomkins serves a one-match ban after his red card against Cardiff last weekend, while Kevin Nolan serves the final game of a four-match suspension.

Ravel Morrison (groin) and James Collins (calf) are both expected to return to the squad following their respective injuries, but Winston Reid is still a couple of weeks from returning from his ankle problem.

Newcastle United (8th, 33 points)

Alan Pardew is still without captain Fabricio Coloccini due to a knee injury.

Mathieu Debuchy sits out through suspension for the final time following a three-match ban.

Words from the Managers:

Neil McDonald, West Ham United assistant manager…

“They [Newcastle] have had a couple of bad results, but having said all of that they’re still in the top half of the league.

“They’re still a very, very good team who’ve got some exciting, dangerous players. We’ve done our homework on them, we’ve got a game plan for them, we know their strengths and weaknesses and we have to exploit those weaknesses.

“[A win] means we have won back-to-back games for the first time since we’ve been back in the Premier League so that would be a big bonus for us.”

Alan Pardew, Newcastle United manager…

“We are playing well. We need to take that to West Ham. They are off the back of a win and they have Big Andy probably coming back into the side.

“It’s now time to turn the corner for West Ham. So we are coming up against a wall of new positivity and we will have to try and get a victory.

“We’ve lost the last four. In three of them we have been very, very good. You need the breaks to go your way sometimes.”
