Cole handed 18-month extension

0

Carlton Cole has put pen-to-paper on a new 18-month deal at the club after his previous short-term deal expired earlier this week.

The 30-year-old striker has scored four goals in 14 first-team appearances since rejoining the club in October and has provided much needed back up for Sam Allardyce’s side while club-record signing Andy Carroll remained sidelined through injury.

And Cole admits he is delighted to be staying at the club for at least another year-and-a-half and has his sights firmly set on helping the side climb up the Premier League table.

He told whufc.com: “I’m really happy. I’ve worked hard to get to the position I’m in right now.

“The manager asked me to come back in the summer and I’ve worked hard to get my match fitness and I’ve scored a few goals whilst doing that. Now I just want to help the team push on and get further up the table.

“I’ve always believed that I can score goals and that’s the main thing as a striker, you want to score goals and help the team win. First and foremost it’s all about Premier League survival, we’re down there fighting it out and we just need to stay up and then work from there next season.”

And Cole also admitted that owes a lot to the club for keeping faith in him by offering him an extended deal and that he was desperate to ensure his future was with the Hammers.

“My main aim was to get back fit, play some games and put myself about making sure that I had a future here,” Cole added.

“That’s what I’ve done and the club has rewarded me. I can’t thank them enough.”

And Cole took to Twitter shortly after the club announced his new deal to express his delight at signing the contract and to thank the fans for their continued support.

Cole’s goal at Cardiff last Saturday made him the club’s joint-second highest Premier League goal scorer with 37, along with Trevor Sinclair. He’ll now be aiming for top spot, which is currently occupied by Paolo Di Canio with 47 goals Premier League strikes.

Carroll’s Impact

West Ham United’s co-owners David Gold and David Sullivan issued an open letter to the club’s supporters on the official website on Monday, giving their backing to manager Sam Allardyce after the 5-0 thumping at Nottingham Forest last weekend.

While they lost heavily again in the first-leg of their Capital One Cup tie against Manchester City on Wednesday, they certainly made up for it on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 victory at Cardiff City which saw them record their first Premier League double since the 2011/12 campaign.

The game started well for the Hammers but when Guy Demel went down under the challenge of teammate Roger Johnson, after accidentally catching him with his elbow, it certainly had a negative effect.

The game was held up for nine minutes and, in my opinion, this delay could have swayed the team’s thinking either way. They could have spent the rest of the game with the worry about the defender on their minds. On the other hand they might have said to themselves in the break they had to endure while Demel was being attended to that they wanted to try and secure all three points. Not only was it must win game, they also would make themselves and the Ivorian feel good.

Before the match began there was widespread speculation on whether or not Andy Carroll would be match ready to take part in the game in Wales despite Allardyce discussing it beforehand. Well, he did make an appearance and it must have had an impact on the team’s performance, although they were already 1-0 up before he entered the fray on 70 minutes.

Not only did it have an impact on the team’s performance in that game, it could also make the difference as the club looks to move away from the predicament it is currently in.

The other major problem is that the team has a number of issues with their defence at the moment with both Winston Reid and James Collins both injured. Even though James Tomkins returned for the weekend’s victory due to his red card, received for two bookings against the Bluebirds, he now misses the home clash with Newcastle United next Saturday.

Furthermore, in his pre-match news conference ahead of the trip to the Welsh capital on Friday, Allardyce seem to suggest that he wouldn’t be pressed towards finding another central defender this week as Collins could be ready to slot back into the side to face the Magpies.

Due to the situation they find themselves in and given that the goal conversion is lower than the chances they continue to create, Allardyce appears desperate to land another striker in the current transfer window. With names such as Lacina Traore who seems likely to come to the club providing he can resolve a work permit issue at a hearing this week. If that deal doesn’t materialise, however, Big Sam has other irons in the fire and is also looking at the possibility of bringing Marco Borriello to the club.

There has always been an opinion amongst the majority of supporters that one striker isn’t enough and this has been proved by the number of goals the team has scored in the league this season.

Last season, several members of the squad were chipping in with their fair share of strikes. This season’s campaign seems to be a different story and West Ham have a tendency to rely on goals coming from their strikers.

It’s possible to endlessly speculate as to the reason for this new front end reliance but it might begin to change once Carroll is fully fit – he certainly threw himself into the thick of the action when he was called upon to replace Cole at the weekend.

It should not be forgotten, of course, that Cole was on the score sheet at Cardiff and not for the first time this season, which has earned him a new West Ham contract for another 18 months.

Ravel drops positive hint

Ravel Morrison dropped a couple of subtle hints that suggest he wants to remain at West Ham today.

His Hammers future has been under growing speculation this month and appeared to have reached boiling point when Fulham manager Rene Meulensteen admitted he had a bid for Morrison rejected by West Ham and that he believes Ravel wants to join the Cottagers.

Rumours of Ravel’s desperation to be reunited with Meulensteen, after working with him at Manchester United, have been thrown around all day, with many fans unhappy with the 20-year-old for either wanting to leave or not coming out publicly to clear up all the uncertainty.

And Morrison did just that late this afternoon when posted a picture on his official Instagram page with him standing pitch side at the Boleyn Ground. It suggested the he was happy to be a West Ham player and that his allegiance is with the club for the time being at least.

Read in to his photo all you like, but it’s certainly a way of showing the fans that he is listening to the comments made about him both in the media and from football supporters on social media and that he’s happy where he is.

But if that wasn’t enough, Morrison then tweeted radio station talkSPORT with an emoticon showing clapping hands after the situation regarding him and Fulham was being discussed by presenters Hawksbee and Jacobs.

They were suggesting he would be mad to leave West Ham at the moment and that the reason behind all the speculation is merely because he feels he deserves more parity with the some of the other West Ham players when it comes to salary, which the club are thought to be interested in opening talks for.

Midfielder is cream of the crop

The 2-0 victory at Cardiff City on Saturday was a welcome boost to everyone associated with the club.

Another welcome boost was Andy Carroll‘s long-awaited return from injury as he came off the bench to set up Mark Noble for the Hammers’ second in injury time.

But it was Noble himself who went on to steal Carroll’s limelight after the game. His performance in the middle of the park, with the captain’s armband wrapped proudly around his arm, was nothing short of superb.

The passion he showed was akin to what the club is all about and his performance was arguably his best in a claret and blue shirt since making his first-team debut in August 2004.

But his performance hasn’t gone unnoticed, however, with football statistics website WhoScored ranking him one of the best central midfielders in Europe over the weekend, putting him in Europe’s best XI.

That obviously meant he was in the Premier League best XI, too, along with goalkeeper Adrian, who was also superb at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday.

It’s been a while since we’ve had a player come close to being the best at anything, so perhaps Noble’s performance against Cardiff and future leadership can inspire the rest of the team to start picking up more points.

Should he show us some loyalty?

Ravel Morrison - West Ham

It seems that loyalty is a rare sight in football nowadays. One minute a player is kissing the badge on his shirt and being adored by the club’s supporters, then he’s off out the door to pastures new as soon as someone waves a fat cheque book in his face.

At the press conferences these players declare their love for this ‘fantastic’ club, then someone offers them an extra twenty grand a week and they’re off without as much as a thank you to the club.

We saw this in 1989 with Paul Ince, in 2001 with Frank Lampard Jr. and again in 2004 with Jermaine Defoe, and countless other times with less high profile players.

With Defoe, the sun hadn’t even set on the day West Ham were relegated to Division One when he handed in a transfer request to the board, whereas players like Michael Carrick and Rob Lee stayed to help us try to get back to the promised land.

And now, if rumours are to be believed, our midfield maestro Ravel Morrison seems to the latest ‘star’ to want to out. Whether this story is just his agent putting stories out in order to get his client a better, longer deal at West ham, or a bigger deal at a ‘bigger’ club, and himself a bumper pay day in the process, we will probably never know, but these stories can be unsettling to an already struggling squad.

As we battle against relegation again, we need our squad to be together, to be united and dig in and battle to push us on up the table. One bad apple can quickly turn the rest of the apples bad too.

I would hate to see Ravel leave the club because I think he has natural talent in abundance and skill any other midfielder would be jealous of, a truly gifted player, and he’s still only 20-years-old. Not just one for the future but one for now and many years to come.

If Ravel reads this then I would urge him to stay where he is appreciated. We haven’t seen such natural talent since Paolo Di Canio was at our club and he is now and always will be a West ham legend.

Legend is a word that gets bantered about a lot, but I sincerely believe he has the ability to earn that status at West ham United Football Club.

When a club is in your heart, you cannot change your allegiance to another club because that would be disloyal. I hope Ravel can show us some loyalty in our hour of need, when the club and fans have stuck by him.

Don’t kick us when we are down, Ravel. Your club needs you.
