Rat bemoans unlucky defeat

0
Razvan Rat - West Ham United

Razvan Rat believes West Ham were unlucky to not take anything from the 3-2 loss to Everton on Saturday.

Rat made his first Premier League start for the Hammers at the Boleyn Ground and was disappointed not to have marked the occasion with three points.

And Rat insists Romelu Lukaku’s winner for the vistiors was lucky, while Leighton Baines’ two free-kicks were a rare show of quality from a player in one game.

Speaking to whufc.com, he said: “I think for us we were unlucky on Saturday. The third goal, when Mirallas crossed, it took a deflection off Ginge and the ball goes directly to Lukaku’s head, so, for me, we were unlucky.

“I don’t think they had too many moments, to many chances to score. But Baines had the best free-kicks and two in a row is really interesting.

“This doesn’t happen very often. It’s really amazing for the same player to put in one in the left [corner] and one in the right. So, amazing free-kicks.”

But the Romanian international believes the squad must now move on from the disappointment and concentrate on putting things right as soon as possible.

“We just need to keep going, to try and get better results and get some wins,” he added.

Petric eyes quick impact

Mladen Petric v Everton

Mladen Petric hopes to get himself on the Hammers’ score sheet as quickly as possible after making his debut against Everton on Saturday.

The Croatian came off the bench and played a huge part in winning a penalty, which Mark Noble cooly slotted home to put the Hammers 2-1 up.

But after seeing the team throw away their second lead of the game and lose 3-2, Petric believes getting in amongst the goals quickly will help his teammates put the loss behind them.

He told whufc.com: “I hope to score as soon as possible, and the most important thing is that the team wins.

“I’m doing intensive training, it’s hard but you get used to it, and i want to get really fit and help the team. I’m very happy to be playing again. It’s been a long break for me, so every day I’m feeling better and better.

“For Tuesday we’ll see. I don’t know what the manager has in his mind, but I hope to be involved and get some time on the pitch.”

And Petric also explained how tough it was to lose in the manner in which the Hammers did to Everton at the Boleyn Ground, but insists the two goals scored will boost the confidence of the players.

“The positive is that we scored two goals in the game,” he added.

“The first-half was very good from our side, we had a lot of ball possession and scored the goal, so we will try and move on with that.

“We were a bit unlucky in the end with the red card and the two goals in the last ten minutes, so it was disappointing. It was a really tough loss. When you go in front twice you shouldn’t give it away.”

Big Sam ready for landmark game

sam allardyce

Sam Allardyce will manage his 100th game for West Ham when the Hammers host Cardiff City in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night.

The 58-year-old currently boasts a record of played 99, won 42, drawn 27 and lost 30, including promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, and masterminded the club’s 10th place finish in the top-flight the following season.

And Allardyce admits that he is proud of what he and the club has achieved so far, and that every target set since he took the job in 2011 has been achieved so far.

He told whufc.com: “Obviously I’m very pleased with the record we had in the Barclays Premier League last year and the year before we were expected to do well in the Championship.

“We’ve done everything that we said we would do, not just me and the back room staff, but also the Chairman and the Vice-Chairman and everyone else behind the scenes.

“We set out with the plan to get promoted in the first year, we did that. The second year we planned to stay up and in the end we surpassed expectations and finished tenth.”

And Allardyce is now concentrating on ensuring the club remain in the Premier League and aims for gradual growth for both the level of quality in the squad and the club itself.

“Now we’ve got to bring a sustainable balance to the squad which is going to keep us in the Premier League for many, many years,” he continued.

“We need to grow slowly, it’s probably unacceptable in today’s football but we have to convince everybody that growing slowly is the right way.

“It sustains the ability to get better and better and when you do that you are then able to achieve more and you can start looking at bigger things.”

PREVIEW: West Ham v Everton

0
West Ham United v Everton - Premier League

Carlton Cole scored for the Hammers in this fixture last season and there will be a lot of West Ham fans out there (somewhere) wishing his was available for Saturday’s meeting at Upton Park this season.

But sadly the prospect of extending our goal drought to four games without finding the net is a real one for as long as Sam Allardyce remains short of options up front.

That is, perhaps, his own fault, despite insisting yesterday the he and the club tried their hardest to bring in a striker on loan before the transfer window closed. “Not hard enough” is the reply echoed amongst the Hammers faithful.

But, although Everton pulled off a fantastic 1-0 victory over Chelsea last weekend, they haven’t exactly been firing on cylinders this season either. Steven Naismith’s winner against the Blues was Everton’s first Premier League goal since the first day of the season, where they stuck two past Norwich City.

What we can be sure of, though, is the rest of our side can be relied upon to do their jobs. Defensively we have been impressive this season, with three clean sheets from four matches, while I can’t remember the last time our midfield had so much strength in depth.

But it’s goals that win you matches, and both sides can’t buy one at the moment. Goalless draw on the cards? For the sake of football alone, I sincerely hope not.

The big question for us this weekend, though, is whether we’ll get to see Mladen Petric in action. Allardyce hinted this week that he’s not quite ready but will definitely feature against Cardiff in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night, but reports are suggesting he’ll at least be on the bench tomorrow. Let’s hope so.

Let’s also hope that James Collins doesn’t find himself with another golden chance to score, just as he did last weekend against Southampton, despite the club releasing footage of him having a ‘shooting competition’ in training the other day. A subtle hint at telling us they’re thinking of pencilling him in as cover for Maiga if all else fails with Petric? Are we that desperate?

Roberto Martinez has strengthened Everton with the arrivals of Romelu Lukaku and Gareth Barry, so we mustn’t be fooled by the absence of Marouane Fellaini. The former Wigan boss has got them playing just like Wigan did under him, but this time he has better players who are capable of winning football matches. So it’ll be a tough test for us, just as it always is against Everton.

Verdict: We need a win, but a draw will do. Just as long as it’s not goalless.

Team News:

West Ham United (10th, 5 points)

The Hammers are still without Andy Carroll, while Stewart Downing and Joe Cole remain sidelined.

George McCartney has returned to full training is not quite ready to feature, while Mladen Petric could make his West Ham debut from the bench.

Alou Diarra (knee) is the only long-term absentee for Sam Allardyce.

Everton (9th, 6 points)

Romelu Lukaku is expected to make his debut for Everton, while Arouna Kone is recovered from a knee injury in time to be considered.

Steven Pienaar’s hamstring problem could see him miss out, but Darren Gibson is fit.

Allardyce defends transfer activity

0
Sam Allardyce - West Ham manager

Sam Allardyce has defended the club’s transfer activity during the summer and insists the club tried hard to bring in another striker.

With Andy Carroll picking up another foot injury facing more weeks/months on the sidelines, Allardyce has been criticised for not bringing in adequate back-up during the transfer window to compensate for when Carroll got injured.

But Allardyce insists the club tried extremely hard to secure at least one of their targets and is disappointed that he wasn’t successful in bring any of them to the Boleyn ground.

He said in his London Evening Standard column: “Just to confirm something, we did try very heard to get another striker in on loan during the window.

“Jermain Defoe, Loic Remy, Romelu Lukaku, Demba Ba, two players from Juventus and Austrian international Marko Arnoutavic, who joined Stoke, were all on our radar at one stage or another but for varying reasons, none of them came.

Stewart Downing, who had become available a little earlier, is an outstanding player who will be invaluable to us. I emphasise that because there has been some criticism out there that, instead of signing him, we should have signed a striker.”

And Allardyce is now calling for Hammers fans to move on from that disappointment ahead of what he believes is going to be a tough season.

“It’s time to move on, get Stewart back from injury, find the right rehabilitation for Andy and improve what we have available,” he added.

“I said before the transfer window closed that I would reserve judgement on this season’s Premier League campaign until September, when I had the chance to assess each club’s squad and their spending. My verdict is it will be tougher this season.”

Allardyce also looked back on his most memorable moments in the Boleyn Ground hot seat as his 100th game as Hammers manager edges closer.

“I have to admit it’s gone quickly and we’ve achieved  a fair bit in those games so far,” he said.

“The doom and gloom moments during those games have been few and the only time I had a worry was when we were going for promotion and drew fives games on the trot.

“The highlights? The legged-play-off semi-final against Cardiff, because I don’t believe will you see any team so dominant over two matches, then the Play-off final. Last season it has to be our second-half against Chelsea, coming from 1-0 down to win 3-1.

“Down the line, we will have improved and be even more of a force to be reckoned with.”
