Macca’s almost ready

George McCartney

George McCartney is preparing to make his return to first team action against West Brom next weekend.

The Northern Irish international has been out since December after picking up a knee ligament injury in training but completed a full 90 minutes in Tuesday’s friendly win over a QPR XI at Upton Park.

And, although admitting he’s still not quite 100% match fit, he’ll be ready to feature in the home fixture against the Baggies on March 30.

He told whufc.com: “The knee’s feeling good. I think I probably need a bit more fitness and a bit more sharpness but that will come with the next few days’ training and hopefully some more game time.

“I’ve only been back in training for about ten days to two weeks. The next game’s not until the end of March so that gives me a bit more time to do some more training, more fitness work and I’ll be raring to go come the West Brom game.”

McCartney’s involment for a West Ham XI on Tuesday has also given the defender the belief that the youngsters coming through the Development  Squad at the moment are edging closer to first team call-ups.

“Blair [Turgott] came up with a very good hat-trick and I think you would be hard pushed to find three better goals,” he explained.

“I know we had three or four first-teamers out there, but there were a few young lads who did themselves justice.”

Olympic Stadium announcement imminent

Olympic Stadium

An official announcement confirming West Ham as the new tenants of the Olympic Stadium is expected this week, ITV understands.

The reports suggest the stadium will be ready for West Ham to play their first competitive game in the 2015/2016 season after three years of renovation work that will include installing retractable seating to hide the athletics track and a new roof.

It has also been reported that the stadium will be used to host some of the 2015 Rugby World Cup matches and to strengthen London’s possible bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The reports come just a week after Leyton Orient chairman Barry Hearn launched a judicial review into the process used to choose the stadium’s new tenants.

However, the London Legacy Development Corporation says the bidding process for the stadium was “fair.”

Elia back on Sam’s radar

Eljero Elia

Sam Allardyce is back in the market for Dutch international Eljero Elia, according to ClubCall.

The Werder Bremen winger was a Hammers target last summer but chose to move from Juventus to Germany.

However, it is believed Liverpool are interested in bringing him to Anfield, while Russian side CSKA Moscow are also preparing to move for the player.

But a bid from West Ham only depends on the future of Sam Allardyce at Upton Park, which could lead to them missing out on their man for a second consecutive summer.

Jarvis: “Another break is frustrating”

Matt Jarvis

Matt Jarvis has admitted it is frustrating that there’s now another two week break between fixtures.

The Hammers had two weeks between their win at Stoke and their 2-0 loss at Chelsea, and are beginning another two week period ahead of their home tie against West Brom.

And the West Ham winger admits it’s hard to gain any kind of momentum when there’s no consistency in the fixture list.

He told whufc.com: “It is a bit frustrating. It can be hard to get momentum. But, it is a time when players who are injured can use that space to work on their fitness knowing they haven’t missed a match.

“We must make sure continue to work hard in training over the next two weeks again and look towards getting a positive result in our next game.

“Although you want to get back out there, after winning or losing, whether it is to keep a run going or put things right after a loss, you just focus on keeping fit and well and looking towards the next game, whenever that may be.”

And, despite the frustration, the club’s record signing is hopeful the side can get the results that will secure top-flight football for another season.

“At this time of the season you are facing sides fighting for different things before the end of the season, titles or trying to escape relegation,” he added.

“We want some more points on board to help us reach a position as high as possible. Obviously the Gaffer knows what we have to do and what he thinks will be the targets we need to go for and we will go out to put the performances in which will hopefully be rewarded of good results.”

Hammers in race for Toulouse defender

Aymen Abdennour

Reports in France are suggesting West Ham are interested in Toulouse defender Aymen Abdennour.

The 23-year-old Tunisian has impressed in Ligue 1 this season and his performances have put him in the shop window for a potential move away from France in the summer.

But Newcastle are thought to be favourites to secure his signature, while Barcelona are also reported to be keeping tabs on the youngster.

However, it’s believed Allardyce is hoping the lure of Premier League football and the possibility of playing in the Olympic Stadium could persuade the defender to choose East London over Tynside and Barcelona.
