Hammers score six on return to action

Cork City v West Ham United

West Ham returned to action in style yesterday as they beat Irish outfit Cork City 6-2 in their first friendly of pre-season.

Goals from Alou Diarra, Joe Cole, Mark Noble, Matty Taylor, Paul McCallum and Ravel Morrison saw Sam Allardyce’s side convincingly brush aside Cork at the end of a successful week-long training camp in Ireland. It could have been seven, however, with Noble unusually missing a penalty early in the second half.

The Hammers fielded completely different sides in each half at Turner’s Cross, including a first-half outing for trialist Titus Bramble.

Summer signings Adrian, Razvan Rat and Danny Whitehead all completed the second half, with Whitehead providing the assist for McCallum’s header.

The game was a huge success for both sides as Cork appeared to thoroughly enjoy hosting the Hammers and the hosts’ chairman Mick Ring paid tribute to the conduct of the club’s players, staff and supporters via Twitter:

Allardyce’s side travel to Boreham Wood on Wednesday night for their second pre-season game as they continue their preparations for the 2013/2014 Premier League season.

Mark Noble - Olympic Stadium

Mark Noble has made West Ham history by becoming the first Hammers player to kick a ball in the Olympic Stadium.

The club have filmed a video documenting Noble’s two-mile journey from his home town of Canning Town to the iconic stadium in Stratford, where the Hammers will officially make their new home in 2016.

The stadium, which will be converted in to a 54,000 all-seater UEFA Category 4 arena, will be one of the best footballing venues in the world once it is completed and should provide a platform for the Hammers to become a real force in European football.

The club’s longest serving player and former Hammer of the Year, Mark Noble, told whufc.com: “It’s a privelage to be the first West Ham player kick a football inside the Olympic Stadium and as a lifelong West Ham fan it was great fun to film the video.

“Hopefully I will be one of those players walking out of the tunnel soaking in the atmosphere, with 54,000 West Ham flags and banners waving.

“The noise is going to be amazing and it’s going to be a fantastic stadium to play in. 2016 just can’t come quick enough.”

Mark Noble is set to make his 250th first-team appearance for the Hammers when they host Cardiff City on the opening day of the 2013/2014 Premier League season on 17 August.

Hammers in Saviola hunt

Javier Saviola

West Ham have joined Cardiff City in the race for experienced Argentina striker Javier Saviola, according to the Daily Star.

The former Real Madrid and Barcelona striker is a free agent after being released by Malaga last season and reports in Spain are suggesting that the Hammers and newly promoted Cardiff are interested in bringing him to England for the first time.

Saviola, who’s impressive career spans 15 years, made his name at Barcelona when he scored 49 goals in 123 La Liga appearances. He then enjoyed loan spells with Monaco and Sevilla before signing for Real Madrid in 2007.

Spells with Benfica and Malaga followed before what could be a switch to the Premier League for the first time in his career.

The 31-year-old hit man also has 40 caps for Argentina, scoring 11 goals.

Hendon hints at Bramble interest

Titus Bramble

First team coach Ian Hendon has hinted that Titus Bramble could still be offered a contract at the club, despite reports he isn’t on a trial.

The former Newcastle United, Wigan Athletic and Sunderland defender, who is now a free-agent, is with the squad as they enjoy an intensive training camp in Ireland, but club insiders had initially confirmed he was not on trial.

However, Hendon has hinted that, if he impresses boss Sam Allardyce, a deal could be on the table.

He told MailOnline: “He’s a good player and over the years he has proved that.

“He’s come back in good shape so credit to him, He’ll be with us for a couple of games and it’s how he performs in the games that will determine whether the manager wants to prolong it.

“The manager will have a look at him and make a decision. He’ll give him every chance to prove himself.”

Bramble, 31, managed 47 Premier League appearances in three years with Sunderland, scoring one goal.

O’Neil in contract u-turn

Gary O'Neil - West Ham

Gary O’Neil has changed his mind over signing a new contract at the club, according to David Sullivan’s son Jack.

It was initially believed that the midfielder has agreed on a new deal after his contract expired at the end of June.

But Jack Sullivan tweeted this afternoon that the 30-year-old had in fact changed his mind and wouldn’t be staying at Upton Park:

The youngster’s tweet has angered several Hammers fan on twitter, with many of them labelling Jack’s words as an embarrassment, after he appeared to suggest the club would be a better team without O’Neil in the side.

It’s not the first time Sullivan Jnr. has angered fellow fans with his choice of words on Twitter, either.

He announced to the fans back in January that the club was going to sign Arsenal’s Marouane Chamakh on loan until the end of the season and that he was sorry about it, further sparking anger from fans looking for a bit more professionalism from a club ‘source.’
