Gary O’Neil was understandably all smiles after playing in a big part in the Hammers’ 3-1 home victory over West Brom on Saturday.

The 29-year-old bagged his first Upton Park goal and provided an inch-perfect corner for Andy Carroll’s opener to help the side edge closer to Premier League safety.

And the midfielder, standing in for the injured Mark Noble, admitted it was nice to finally see one of his attempts his the back of the net.

He told whufc.com: “It was nice to see one go in. It’s about two years to the week since I got my injury against Aston Villa here, so it’s nice to get a Premier League goal.

“Obviously I got a couple in the Championship last year, but it’s nice to get back on the scoresheet in the Premier League.”

O’Neil was also pleased with the team’s performance and admitted everything they worked on prior to the game and their game plan worked wonders in the convincing win.

“It was a good performance, especially the first half,” he added.

“We took our chances well and did everything we had worked on. We knew they were going to sit off a bit so we tried to drop balls into Andy and get balls wide to Jarvo and I thought it worked quite well.”
