A World Cup winning defender is due to have a medical ahead of a move to West Ham, according to the club’s official site.

The Hammers are in the market for a right-back as the final hours of the summer transfer window wind down, and the club have confirmed a right-back is set to undergo a medical and will sign a deal before tonight’s 11pm deadline.

The defender’s identity has not yet been confirmed, but comments on Twitter are claiming that it is former Liverpool and Real Madrid star Alvaro Arbeloa (above).

Arbeloa did, of course, win the World Cup with Spain in 2010 as well as the European Championships in 2008 and 2012.

The 33-year-old made over 230 first team appearances for Real Madrid throughout his career, as well as over 60 in the Premier League for Liverpool.

As mentioned above, it is not yet known whether it is definitely Arbeloa who is going to sign for West Ham, but that appears to be the word on Twitter shortly after West Ham’s Insider Column was published.

The defender was released by Real Madrid at the end of last season.
