The West Ham era under Manuel Pellegrini did not get off to the best of starts, as the Hammers were rolled over by Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

A defeat at Anfield against a side widely tipped to fight Manchester City for the Premier League title is far from a surprising result but many were left less than impressed with the Hammers’ approach.

While Liverpool were superb, West Ham failed to raise their performance to match the occasion and suffered a disappointing result – which earned criticism from former Liverpool man Gary Gillespie.

Speaking on LFC TV, he said:

“West Ham spent £100m on that team and they were made to look very, very ordinary. Liverpool’s performance was really, really good.

“West Ham did not give them too much of a contest. It does not cost too much to have enthusiasm and desire, and I did not see that from the West Ham side.”
