Is this the ultimate Man United v West Ham combined XI?

It’s fair to say Man United have benefited nicely from West Ham over the years.

But then again, they’ve also returned the favour with a few top players who have arrived at Upton Park following a successful spell at Old Trafford.

As we prepare for the big Premier League clash tomorrow, we take a look at who might make up a combined XI between the two sides.

From the obvious stars, to the forgotten heroes, to the most hated – we think we’ve covered them all in this combined XI.

But did we miss anyone? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below…

GK – Roy Carroll

Roy Carroll pips Raimond Van der Gouw to the starting goalkeeper spot in this side.

The Northern Ireland international spent four years at Manchester United and endured a spell riddled with errors where he was most infamously remembered for dropping Pedro Mendes’ long-range effort over the line, although the goal was not given.

After his contract expired he joined West Ham on a free transfer in 2005. Carroll managed 35 appearances over two years at the club.

Now aged 38, he is still playing with League Two side Notts County.

RB – Jonathan Spector

West Ham signed defender Jonathan Spector from Manchester United in summer 2006 after he only managed three league appearances in as many years for Alex Ferguson’s side.

He managed over 100 league appearances for the Hammers without ever really nailing down a starting spot in the side. His most famous day came in a League Cup match against his old club Manchester United when he was promoted to a midfield place.

The American was untouchable and scored twice in a 4-0 thrashing at Upton Park. Spector was released by us in 2011 and has played for Championship outfit Birmingham ever since.

CB – Rio Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand was a product of the famed West Ham academy and went on to establish himself as one of the world’s best defenders whilst at Manchester United.

Ferdinand broke into the first team at the age of 18 and won ‘Hammer of the Year’ in 1999, whilst still only 19-years-old.

After more than 125 league appearances for West Ham, Rio was sold to Leeds for £18m which broke both the British transfer record and made him the world’s most expensive defender.

The rest of his career speaks for itself; he went on to win six Premier League titles, three League Cups and a Champions League with the Red Devils as well as earning 81 England caps. Ferdinand retired last year, bringing an end to a fantastic career.

LB – Ralph Milne

Ralph Milne starts slightly out of position here in this 3-man defence due to a lack of defenders that have played for both sides.

Milne is also slightly out of the Premier League era but makes the side to make up the numbers. Primarily a winger, he struggled to make an impact in his three years at Manchester United.

He was loaned out to West Ham in 1990 but only managed one appearance under Lou Macari in the League Cup. This also happened to be his last ever professional game as a result of alcohol problems and injury struggles.

CDM – Paul Ince

Paul Ince is an infamously detested figure amongst West Ham fans for obvious reasons.

Having played for the club since for 10 years, 22-year-old Ince was pictured in a Manchester United shirt whilst still contracted to the Hammers, causing outrage amongst our supporters.

Ince played over 200 times for the Red Devils over six years before moving abroad to Inter Milan.

He won two Premier Leagues and two FA Cups during his period at Manchester United and made over 50 caps for England in his career.

CDM – Michael Carrick

Partnering Ince in defensive midfield is Michael Carrick.

Carrick came through our youth academy and was part of the 1999 FA Youth Cup winning side. Carrick was a revelation after breaking through and became an integral part of our midfield in the early 2000s before selling him to Tottenham.

He moved to Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United in 2006 and has been there ever since and accumulated nearly 400 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils.

The 34-year-old also has five Premier League titles, a Champions League and 34 England caps in an impressive career.

RAM – Ravel Morrison

The first attacking midfielder in this side is the notorious Ravel Morrison.

Ravel came through the academy at Manchester United and was considered by Alex Ferguson as the best player he had ever seen at that age.

Unfortunately his attitude let him down and he was shipped out to West Ham in January 2012. Morrison showed glimpses of brilliance, especially with his superb solo goal against Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

But a failure to apply himself and stay out of trouble ended with a move to Italian side Lazio last January. Many fans have been recently calling for his return with reports circulating that suggest he wants a return to England.

LAM – Luke Chadwick

The other attacking midfielder is Luke Chadwick.

Chadwick graduated from the Manchester United academy and spent seven years in total at Old Trafford.

The wide midfielder only had limited game time though, picking up 38 total appearances for the club before moving to West Ham.

He joined us for our 2004-05 Championship campaign in which we were promoted and played 36 games for us that year with one goal. The following year he was loaned out to Stoke and the move soon became permanent.

The 35-year-old most recently played for boyhood club Cambridge United.

ST – Carlos Tevez

Carlos Tevez is heralded as a hero by West Ham fans after he played an integral part of our great escape in the 2006/07 season.

Tevez arrived on deadline day, alongside international teammate Javier Mascherano, in a move that shook the football world. The duo struggled to adapt to English football initially but Tevez settled in towards the end of the season and scored some important goals which helped us stay up.

His most memorable goal was against Manchester United in a 1-0 win at Old Trafford to keep us up on the last day of the season. He won ‘Hammer of the Year’.

That was to be his last game in a West Ham shirt as he then moved to Manchester United, where he enjoyed a successful two title-winning seasons before moving to bitter rivals Manchester City.

Tevez still loves West Ham and our fans still love Tevez.

ST – Teddy Sheringham

Another great striker is next in our list.

Sheringham played over 100 times in the league for Manchester United between 1997 and 2001 where he won three consecutive Premier League titles, an FA Cup and the memorable 1999 Champions League final in which he got the last minute assist for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s winner.

Sheringham joined West Ham in 2004 with the club aiming to win promotion back to the Premier League. In three years at the club, Sheringham played 87 times and scored 30 goals and won ‘Hammer of the Year’ in his first season at the club.

He still holds the record of being the oldest player ever to play a Premier League game when he represented the Hammers aged 40 years and 270 days.

Sheringham is currently the manager of League Two side Stevenage.

ST – David Bellion

The last striker in this trio is less impressive than the previous two – David Bellion.

The Frenchman joined Manchester United from Sunderland at the age of 21 in 2003, despite only scoring once in the league in 20 games for Sunderland.

Over the course of three seasons he spent at Manchester United, he managed four league goals. His last season, 2005-06, saw him spend a period of time on loan at Upton Park.

After scoring on his debut in the League Cup, Bellion failed to make much of an impact and returned to Old Trafford having only played eight league games for Alan Pardew’s side.

Bellion now plies his trade for French Ligue 2 side Red Star Paris.
