A make-shift Hammers side were held to a 1-1 draw by Conference South side Boreham Wood this evening.

Big Sam’s side travelled the short journey to North London to take on the non-league side at Meadow Park hoping to make improvements on their 3-1 loss to Austria Wien on Staurday.

Allardyce named two sides – one for each half – with former Wood midfielder Pelly Ruddock being name first half captain as he prepared to take on his former team mates since his move to the Hammers last winter.

Sam Baldock put the visitors in front – his second in two pre-season outings – with a deflected shot after Vaz Te unselfishly laid the ball off following a darting run through the middle of the park.

The second half saw a whole new 11 line-up for West Ham but, despite several efforts to put the game to bed, Wood equalised through substitute Effiong, who confidently slotted his shot past Jake Larkins.

Late chances from Nicky Maynard and Kevin Nolan went begging, though, and West Ham had to settle for an unlikely draw against a spirited and determined Boreham Wood side.

West Ham starting XI: Jaaskelainen, Driver, McCartney, Spence, K.Lee, Noble, Moncur, Ruddock, Fanimo, Vaz Te, Baldock.

West Ham 2nd-half XI: Larkins, Chambers, Wearen, Reid, Potts, Morrison, O’Neil, Turgott, Taylor, Nolan, Maynard.

Subs: Baxter, Shaw, Powell.

West Ham’s next pre-season match is on Saturday when they’ll make another short journey, this time to Roots Hall Stadium to take on Southend United.
