Hammers Chat: West Ham’s midfield needs to do better

Another game. Another draw. Another 0-0 scoreline.

In what has to be the worst West Ham performance since Slaven Bilic arrived at the club in the summer, there were few positives to take from Sunday’s stalemate with Swansea.

We do have a lot of injuries to key players, and we know that’s the main reason behind our dip in performances and winless run.

However, against Swansea we were flat, devoid of any real goal threat and allowed a manager-less Swansea to control the game for an entire 90 minutes.

And that’s one of the big talking points the lads over at Hammers Chat were discussing after the game, with the midfield three of Alex Song, Mark Noble and Cheikhou Kouyate coming under particular scrutiny.

The three midfielders failed to control the midfield on Sunday, mostly due to the fact they were playing so close to each other, limiting the space around the them to be able to play and start attacks.

As a result, Nikica Jelavic was left even more isolated up front than he should’ve been, while both Mauro Zarate and Enner Valencia provided our best chances of the game after being forced to come in from wide and create something – mostly because no one else was doing that.
