Co-chairman David Gold has explained the difficulties West Ham have faced in their attempts to strengthen the squad this summer and insists there will be at least one or two additions before the end of the transfer window.

Despite the club-record signing of Andy Carroll and the free transfers of Razvan Rat and Adrian, it has been no secret that the Hammers have struggled to secure the services of several of their summer transfer targets.

But Gold has tried to calm the panic amongst Hammers fans by explaining that hard work is going on behind the scenes to ensure there are at least a couple of new faces in the squad come September.

He told SportsDirectNews: “We know we need a back up striker and it is clear to everybody that we are working hard to bring one in but there is a budget in place.

“We need to remember that we are operating under a new regime of Financial Fair Play Regulations. That’s the new reality.

“We at West Ham have spent £16million on Andy Carroll. I don’t see any other club having equalled that outside of the top half-a-dozen.”

And Gold has also revealed that, although manager Sam Allardyce is predominantly in the market for loan signings, there is still some money left in the transfer kitty should he need it, while fans should not get anxious at the lack of arrivals just yet.

“There is a little cash left in the kitty and we are looking at a couple of loans,” Gold confirmed.

“Some clubs have used theirs but we have two available plus cash if required. I’m confident we will get our man and nobody should be over anxious about it.

“There’s three weeks left and we need to get this absolutely right.”
