Forget Andre Gray: West Ham could sign one of these four strikers for £15m instead

West Ham United are believed to be in pole position to sign Andre Gray this summer.

Andre Gray is angling for an exit from Burnley this summer and a number of Premier League sides are in the hunt for his signature with West Ham heading the chase.

With one year left on his deal at Turf Moor, Gray and Burnley have come to a standstill on wages.

With nine Premier League goals to his name in his debut season in the top flight, the 26-year-old has been identified as a £15m target for the Hammers.

For the record, I believe that Andre Gray could develop into a decent striker at West Ham given the service and game time.

However, he is not the quick fix we need to guarantee at least fifteen goals next term and is therefore not worth the price that is being quoted.

Here, I look at four alternatives that we could consider splashing that £15m on…

Chris Wood

Rather than gamble on someone who scored just nine goals last year, West Ham could look to sign the Championship top scorer.

The New Zealand international was bagging goals for fun, scoring 27 goals in the Championship as Leeds finished 7th.

The 25-year-old is probably worth between £10m and £15m so the Hammers could explore this option.

Kasper Dolberg

Looking to sign Kasper Dolberg would be more of a risk but he is one of the hottest young prospects in European football at the moment.

The 19-year-old scored a remarkable 23 goals in 47 appearances for Ajax last season, despite still being a teenager.

With many clubs hopeful of snapping the Denmark international up, West Ham could look to use their £15m on this signing.

Mario Mandzukic

The veteran striker has been on West Ham’s radar for some time now.

Juventus still like the 31-year-old but he is playing in an unfamiliar left wing role for the Italian giants and West Ham could offer him a striker role.

Slaven Bilic knows the Croatian international well from his time as manager of the national team and this could be a decisive factor.

Javier Hernandez

Javier Hernandez is, of course, the obvious alternative.

West Ham are very interested in the Mexican international, who has a £13m release clause from Bayer Leverkusen.

After hitting 39 goals in the past two seasons in Germany and proving himself as a goal scorer in the Premier League with Manchester United, the 29-year-old needs to be the Hammers’ top summer target.
