West Ham’s season in the Premier League has not gone to plan at all. Kicking off the campaign with Graham Potter, the Hammers got off to a poor start and sacked the manager in late September after earning just one win in the opening five games. Appointing Nuno Espirito Santo, there have been occasional glimpses of improvement and West Ham have lost only three times since mid-January.
However, despite putting points on the board, West Ham remain in the bottom three and remain deep in a relegation battle with seven games remaining. This article will look at whether the East End club can pull themselves out of trouble and avoid the drop.
Toughest Test: Arsenal
No game in the Premier League is easy but West Ham fans would probably prefer to do without taking on leaders Arsenal when they need to put points on the board. Assessing Champions League betting odds has the Gunners as favourites to beat Portuguese giants Sporting to reach the semi-finals of the competition which shows how highly-rated Mikel Arteta’s side are currently. West Ham do boast home advantage but it will take a huge effort to take three points from the title chasers.
The Gunners represent the toughest challenge while trips to Brentford and Newcastle will also prove tough tests for Jarrod Bowen and Co. While the Bees are pushing for Europe, the Magpies will be aiming for a strong end to the campaign after stuttering for much of the year. If West Ham could earn two draws on the road while also earning a positive results against Arsenal, those points could prove crucial come May
Best Chance of Victory: Wolves
West Ham’s most favourable fixture is a home clash with Wolves. However, while the Molinuex club have been rooted to the bottom of the table all campaign, this will be no gimme as the team has lost just twice in the last eight matches. Rejuvenated under Rob Edwards, Wolves have been in games and far from a side that gets battered each week and so West Ham will have to be at the races to earn the win.
Wolves are 13 points adrift with only 21 to play for and so relegation looks highly likely. This will take the pressure off though and so the Hammers will be taking on a side that is playing with freedom. Nuno Espirito Santo will have to remind his players of this to ensure every player stays fully focused in West Ham’s bid to not be dragged down with Edwards’ men.
The Hammers take on Leeds in the FA Cup before the Wolves game and this could be beneficial, allowing the squad to take their focus away from the relegation battle for a brief time. Getting through would certainly ensure there is a feel-good factor club around the place for that last week at least. West Ham also host Leeds at home in the final game of the season and it could well be that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side still need to pick up points to stay up.
Can Tottenham be Caught?
West Ham are set to battle London rivals Tottenham in their bid for survival in an incredible story few would have expected at the start of the Premier League season. Playing in the Champions League after their Europa League success, Spurs did endure a disappointing domestic campaign in 2024/25 but many believed the team would be pushing for the top six again this time around.
A Tottenham comeback hasn’t occurred though and West Ham can actually put Spurs in the bottom three with a victory over Wolves. With that scenario in mind, the Hammers can absolutely catch Tottenham and finish above them at the end of the season. Nottingham Forest and Leeds are also at risk and so West Ham have plenty of opportunities to save themselves.
Wrapping Up
Overall, West Ham have work to do but certainly have a good chance of avoiding relegation in May. The team have shown strong form at times and can still catch a number of sides in their bid to beat the drop.
