West Ham are desperately seeking new additions as they seek a fresh start under Manuel Pellegrini, with midfield set to be an area of focus.

The Hammers saw Portugal international Joao Mario spend the second-half of last season on-loan at the London Stadium but, due to Inter Milan’s asking price, it’s unclear whether he’ll return on a permanent basis.

West Ham have regularly been linked with the services of Mario’s international colleague William Carvalho but it seems the Hammers have fallen behind in the hunt.

TeamTalk cites reports that indicate Everton have pulled ahead of their Premier League rivals in the chase for Carvalho, who is likely to leave Sporting Lisbon after a number of off-field controversies.

It’s stated the Toffees have met with the agent of the 26-year-old, who’s set to star for his nation at the World Cup in Russia, as Sporting prepare for a mass exodus.

Rui Patricio and Daniel Podence have already cancelled their contracts with the club, while speculation suggests Bas Dost, Bruno Fernandes and Gelson Martins could seal transfers in the coming weeks.
