As boosts go, Alex Song retiring from international football and subsequently not going to the African Cup of Nations with Cameroon has to be up there with the biggest.

The 27-year-old has been unbelievable for us since joining on-loan from Barcelona in the summer – many fans still can’t beleive we have a player like him turning out for us every week. But we do, and doesn’t stop there.

It’s no secret that the board would jump at the chance to sign him permanently if the deal is right in the summer. He has previously said he will only sign for a club in the Champions League, but his comments upon retirement last night suggest he may be tempted to stay put right here in east London. Wonderful.

During his personal message on Instagram, the midfielder went on to say: “I want to take time to focus purely on my domestic football and start to rebuild my career at West Ham United.”

Rebuilding a career can take time. Longer than six months, I’d say. So with that in mind, can we read in to this and suggest he’s getting ready to agree to a permanent switch to the Boleyn Ground?

Let’s hope so. Here are some of the best tweets from Hammers who were delighted with the news…
