It was a surprise to see us secure Alex Song on a loan deal from Barcelona last season.

It was seen as a right coup for the club and he was absolutely immense during the first half of the campaign, instrumental in our rise to the third in the Premier League during December.

But his dip in form during the second half of the season had many fans questioning whether it would be worth bringing him in on a permanent deal this summer.

Earlier this week The Mirror claimed we were willing to offer Alex Song a three-year contract but were baulking at Barcelona’s £5million asking price.

Still, it was widely expected that we’d try very hard to bring him back to the club. After all, he’s undoubtedly a world class player, and we’re going to need a very large squad with strength depth this season.

And it looks as if a deal to bring him in permanently is closer than we think. The main himself has just posted a picture of himself outside West Ham’s Chadwell Heath training ground this afternoon, which suggests he’s speaking the club about personal terms.

Could we be seeing a double deal with Marseille’s Dimitri Payet later today?
