West Ham are edging closer to a deal to sign PSG goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, according to journalist and transfer insider Ekrem Konur.

The reporter claimed on Twitter earlier in July that Areola had agreed personal terms with the Hammers and that he was just waiting for the two clubs to come to an agreement before the deal could be completed, while at the beginning of the month he had explained the deal would only be season-long loan.

Since then, however, reports had emerged that David Moyes was beginning to favour a move for West Brom stopper Sam Johnstone instead, which had led to many believing a deal to sign the former Fulham loanee was dead in the water.

However, Ekrem Konur has tweeted this week to explain that Areola has asked PSG to grant him permission to leave for east London and that the player expects an agreement between the clubs to be made soon.

Of course, the nature of any transfer window means that you can’t read too much into reports until the player is officially announced by the club, as anything can happen until pen is put to paper on a deal, while some reports can obviously be fabricated or blown out of proportion.

However, Ekram Konur has been pretty consistent with his claims regarding West Ham’s hopes of signing Areola and the player’s hopes of moving back to London, where he impressed during a loan spell at Fulham last season.

Here’s what the reporter tweeted on Wednesday afternoon…
