The next 4th of October, the English Premier League will treat us with another derby of London involving two teams from the football capital of the world. Sadly, this one won’t be a match between two powerhouses, because one of the two is already grasping for air, in this young season, fighting hard to avoid a nightmare: relegation. The game between Arsenal and West Ham represents a clash between a team willing to challenge Liverpool FC for the trophy and the other trying to stay in the league.
If Mikel Arteta is doing well, Graham Potter must ward off the threat of dismissal and regain his footing in the standings. The match on October 4th promises to be a highly anticipated one, between two London teams in opposite situations. Predictions for the upcoming match
While we write this, it is difficult to predict something other than a resounding Arsenal victory. Even if the Gunners showed some weaknesses during the first games of this season, they are marching with ease in the Premier League, losing only a game against the firsts of the class: the Reds. Liverpool is the clear favourite to win the EPL, so there’s nothing too worrying in losing against them. They drew against Manchester City but, again, this is a powerhouse we are talking about. Arsenal is currently in second position on the table, tied with Tottenham Hotspur and Bournemouth. Among these three, the Gunners are the strongest and can be considered a true contender.
West Ham, on the other hand, is seriously lacking, in each and every position. They won a single game, in Nottingham, against another largely disappointing team, Forest FC. The other 4 matches they played ended in bitter defeats. Only Wolverhampton Wanderers are faring worse than them in the league and their 19th position is a clear signal of how bad things are looking right now. One can hope that everything will quickly change, but the hard truth is that the team seems clueless and way too distracted on the pitch. Upsetting a team like Arsenal will bring joy and motivation back to London Stadium, but achieving that result seems pretty difficult.
Is a leadership change to be expected?
West Ham supporters are quite disappointed with the disastrous beginning of the 2025-2026 campaign, and they are pretty vocal about it. The staff showed sympathy and wrote an open letter to specify that nobody is happy with the way things are going, at the moment. The problem is, there has not been any change to speak of, in the way this team plays. Maybe appointing a new coach could help.
This is exactly what the board is pondering to do at the moment and, who knows, maybe when they face Arsenal there won’t be Potter anymore on the sideline, giving indications to the Hammers. There were discussions about hiring Jose Mourinho, but the Special One signed with Benfica. Kieran McKenna is another name recently linked with West Ham, but he didn’t seem too interested in taking the job when the season is already ongoing. If he has not any interest in signing, there is not really any point in chasing him. The strongest candidate may be another Portuguese: Nuno Espirito Santo. He was dismissed by Nottingham Forest after the defeat against the Hammers, on the 9th of September, but he is a good coach, with a clear vision that could help West Ham in the long run.
Right now, the main thing may be changing the person in charge. Perhaps, the actual name is not that important, as long as he is a new face, with a fresh perspective on things.
