As things stand it feels as if we’re no closer to appointing a new manager.

But with every day that passes a new development in our search for the right man catches off guard.

After Unai Emery reportedly decided to stay with Sevilla instead of take the €6million-a-year we were offering it was widely accepted that Slaven Bilic was nailed on to be the man.

But now it appears Marcelo Bielsa has is back in the race for the job. MirrorFootball are reporting that the Marseille manager wants the job after refusing to agree a contract extension with the Ligue 1 outfit.

One could look at it and believe he’s only put himself back in the frame after he saw the figures we were prepared to pay Emery and thought, “I wouldn’t mind a bit of that.”

Can you blame him?

It’s still believed Bilic is the favourite to be officially offered the job, but now Bielsa’s back in the mix who knows?

David Gold and David Sullivan said on the official website yesterday: “We want to bring in an established manager who has been there and done it.”

If that’s the case then it all but rules Bilic out of the race and makes Bielsa the odds-on favourite.

We’re expected to appoint a new boss in the next few days, according to the Daily Star, so it’ll be interesting to see whether Bielsa pip Bilic to the post.

Meanwhile, the likes of Garry Monk and Michael Laudrup remain outsiders for the job should the board fail in their pursuits of Bilic and Bielsa.
